Read More	Written July 21, 2021, by the current owner and sponsor of Richard Yousling's findagrave memorial, djtruitt, Ottumwa: Richard "Dick" Yousling was one of the nicest, most interesting and inspiring men I have ever met. I first met Dick when I was volunteering at Vista Woods Care Center, and he was living there. Dick spent his days in a wheelchair; however, his room looked more like a library than a nursing home room. He spent hours on his genealogy research, and shelves lined his room with his books and research materials. Whenever there was something going on at the nursing home, Dick could be counted on to come out and join in the activity. He had been my husband's music teacher years before, and as soon as he saw my husband, he remembered giving him coronet lessons. I didn't realize until I happened onto an article about him in an Ottumwa newspaper that Dick was also a renown artist and very active in the art world. In searching the Ottumwa papers further, I found a number of other articles, and I have included references to three of them below. The picture I have posted here is from the Ottumwa Courier of August 1, 1973, and in this picture Dick is showing two of his drawings that were to be a part of his exhibit at the Family Outdoor Arts Festival that week-end in Ottumwa. The article stated that Dick had been drawing for over 15 years and also played for many years with the Ottumwa Municipal Band. In the Ottumwa Courier of April 1, 1976, in article was written about a special art show the Ottumwa Heights College Art Board was sponsoring during the month of April, entitled, "A Retrospective of Dick Yousling." This article included this paragraph: "Yousling for many years has been a prime organizer and contributor in the artistic community of Ottumwa. He overcame a handicap to devote all his energies to art activities and has received meritorious recognition for his watercolors and pen-and-in drawings." In another article in the Ottumwa Courier of April 10, 1976, Dick's art works were to be displayed that month in the mini-gallery of Ottumwa Heights College. Of particular interest in that display were drawings of Ottumwa homes and buildings representing interesting architectural periods. The article gave the information that Dick's interest in art began about 15 years before when he joined various night classes just for fun. His interest in art quickly grew, and he frequently visited the best art shows in the Midwest. His own work focused on local scenes - old but majestic buildings about to be wiped away, works that would be highlighting the display at Ottumwa Heights College. Yousling, 92, of Ottumwa, died at 6:20 a.m. December 25, 2014 at Vista Woods Care Center. He was born March 17, 1922 in Ida Grove, IA to John Raymond and Fannie Shearer Yousling. Dick was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He earned a BA from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and a MA from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. He worked for 20 years for Sorden Music in the sheet music department and as a music teacher, retiring in 1969. Surviving are two nieces, Jill Amidon of Greensboro, NC and Sally Kimball of Belle Plaine, KS. He was preceded in death by a brother, John L. Yousling. His body has been cremated. The family will greet friends at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Vista Woods Care Center. Inurnment will be in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Vista Woods Care Center or Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter, 200 12th Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415.
