Description	:	On May 16, 2007, Richard Thomas Barrett, 73, originally of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord. There, he joins his three brothers Marvin, John and Dewey; his brother-in-law Pete Davis; his parents, John Redmond Barrett (of Napier) and Ercie Glenn Conrad Barrett (of Riffle Run,Burnsville); and his brother Jesus. Read More	On May 16, 2007, Richard Thomas Barrett, 73, originally of Burnsville, went to be with the Lord. There, he joins his three brothers Marvin, John and Dewey; his brother-in-law Pete Davis; his parents, John Redmond Barrett (of Napier) and Ercie Glenn Conrad Barrett (of Riffle Run,Burnsville); and his brother Jesus. He was a devoted son, steadfast brother, loving father, and grinning grandfather. He was also a gifted musician, a pragmatic engineer, a skilled marksman, a tough critic and a tireless packrat. He had a penchant for Ritz crackers, for all shirts, both plaid and flannel, for ten-gallon Stetsons, and for fancyWestern-style dress clothes from Sheplers catalog. Sitting high above his trademark grin was any number of trademark mesh-backed ball caps; well below that grin and close to his heart was his trademark pocket protector. He was early to all important appointments -- even in death. A member of Faith Baptist Temple in Cleveland, Ohio, Rich Barrett was a child of God.Rich is survived by his five sisters and their families: Mary Davis of Jackson, Ohio; Mildred and Curly Jackson, of Hirman, Ohio; Beulah (Madge) and Johnny Wines, and Lena Barrett, both of Buckhannon; and Rena and Buck Gregory of Napier. He also leaves behind six loving children and their families: Mike and Theresa Barrett of Eugene, Ore.; Pam and Stephen Drone of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; Scott and Kim Buckosh of Ravenna, Ohio; Tim and Sheila Barrett of Chandler, Ariz.; Melody of Akron, Ohio and Travis and Lisa Barrett of Columbus, Ohio. Four grandchildren weep for his absence: Austin, Autumn, Rachel and Anna. Countless nephews and nieces mourn Richards passing. Born fourth of nine children on Aug. 21, 1933, on Buffalo Run in Braxton County, Richards legacy is, in part, a testimony to how much he valued education. A 1952 graduate of Burnsville High, Rich worked his way through West Virginia University by playing country and bluegrass music on weekends. By 1957, Rich earned his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. Soon after serving a brief stint as Private, First Class, in the Army (1959), Richard eventually settled in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, near Cleveland. He worked at NASA Lewis Research Center for 35 years, retiring as senior design engineer of the aerospace division. During that time, he earned his master of science degree in engineering from Toledo University (1982). Apart from his formal education, Rich was a voracious reader of The Cleveland Plain Dealer and The Braxton Democrat (a paper whose name sharply opposes Richs politics). He was well instructed in keys and chords and all components of the guitar, the fiddle, the banjo and the mandolin. His observational knowledge of all animals native to the hills of West Virginia, of gauges and barrels, and of something he liked to call Kentucky windage served him and his family well in his more formidable years. And if you had an ailing engine of any sort -- automobile, lawnmower or the like -- Rich Barrett was the man to call.After flying the NASA coupe, Rich became a privately contracted consultant, specializing in fasteners of all (and often obscure) types. His Fastener Design Manuel, published under NASAs name in 1990, earned him worldwide acclaim in the fastener industry. He was a regular contributor to The American Fastener Journal, a monthly magazine (with an albeit narrow demographic), in a section entitled Ask the Expert.Technically, then Rich was an engineer by trade, but he was a self-proclaimed engineer and musician. Rich was a member (and often leader) of several Country & Western, bluegrass and (most recently) even Irish bands over the past 55 years. He leaves behind innumerable pickinand grinninbuddies. To all those who have played melodies with him, join the angelic chorus that sings a doleful dirge already and lift your voices and songs to heaven just one more time on Richard's behalf. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burnsville.
