"Richard Watson served with distinction in the Palmetto Regiment in Mexico and among the first who scaled the walls of Chepultepec. He was shot through the thigh and captured by the Mexicans.

When carried before General Santa Anna, he told the General through an interpreter that he was related to General Waddy Thompson, former Minister to Mexico and held in esteem by Santa Anna.
