The object of the occasion was the placing of stones at the graves of Richard and Edward Watson. These stones were obtained from the U.S. Government through the Star Fort Chapter, D.A.R. All present were related to the two heroes of the Mexican War, whose graves were thus marked. The old burying ground is in the woods and not far from the house now owned and occupied by Mr A C Stockman about five miles south of Greenwood. Quite a number of the crowd had never visited the spot. Mr Stockman walked before the carriages and showed the way. The house was the birthplace of Edward and Richard Watson. It was built by Richard Watson, Sr for his bride, nee Lavinia Brooks and these were the parents of the heroes of the day. After the death of Richard Watson, Sr, his widow, Lavinia Brooks Watson married Dr John P Barratt, the celebrated Physician and Naturalist. After placing the monumental stones, the company was called to order by Miss Bessie Tolbert, who introduced Miss Louise Fleming, a great niece of Edward and Richard Watson and now Regent of the Star Fort Chapter, D.A.R. It was regretted that Honorable J Hampden Brooks, a near relative, could not be present and give some personal reminiscences of those times and the men. In his absence, Miss Fleming read a sketch of Richard Watson from a recent publication of "The Index" also sketches of the Palmetto Regiment, written by Richard Watson and published in the "Abbeville Banner", May 17, 1848 and his own description of his capture and imprisonment and escape. Edward Watson died in Mexico. His only child, Mrs I D Gaillard of Rome, GA was unable to be present. Mrs Lucy Watson Ware of Washington DC, daughter of Richard Watson was present. she had with her the medal presented to her father for bravery as a member of the Palmetto Regiment. Per the Article below: Richard Watson, Sr was son of William Watson and Lucy Griffin And, William Watson was the son of Edward Watson (& wife) from Virginia to SC in 1771 Excerpts from: The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC) Thursday, 29 May 1930 "Richard Watson served with distinction in the Palmetto Regiment in Mexico and among the first who scaled the walls of Chepultepec. This Richard Watson, of Mexican War fame, had a brother, Edward, who was also in Mexican service and died in Mexico. Both are buried in the Watson family burying ground about a mile west of the old Dr John P Barratt place, four miles southwest of Greenwood. Their father, also was named Richard. He married Lavinia Brooks and settled the place afterwards known as "the Barratt Place". He was a son of William Watson and Lucy Griffin and his father William was a son of Edward Watson and his wife who emigrated from Virginia to this section in 1771 being among the first settlers in the community to which their descendants have lived ever since."
