He was born November 17, 1942, at Norborne, Mo. to George Henry and Margaret Anita (West) Clasen. The family relocated to Florence where in 1948, a brother, David Vaughn was born. Read More	Richard "Dick" West Clasen, 65, of Eureka, died Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born November 17, 1942, at Norborne, Mo. to George Henry and Margaret Anita (West) Clasen. The family relocated to Florence where in 1948, a brother, David Vaughn was born. Richard and David both attended Florence Elementary and High School. Richard excelled at distance running, he won the state half mile his senior year, and still holds the state record. He graduated from high school in 1959. After graduation he attended Emporia State University. He married Linnie Ann Hicks in August of 1962 and to their union three children were born, Robert Alan, Katherine Ann and Sharon Anita. Clasen began his newspaper career as editor of the Florence Bulletin in 1964. The family relocated to Yates Center where he was co-publisher and editor of the Yates Center News. Richard and Linnie later divorced. Richard married B. Rachel Smith on September 14, 1974 in Yates Center. They had Rebecca Arlene and Robin Amanda. In June of 1976, the Greenwood County Publishing Co., was organized and purchased The Eureka Herald. His wife Rachel was named president of the corporation and Richard was named secretary/treasurer of the corporation and he also served as the Editor and Publisher of the newspaper until his death. The weekly newspaper was founded July 3, 1868 by S.G. Mead, and The Eureka Herald was the first newspaper ever published in Greenwood County. In the nearly 135 years of existence as a newspaper, The Eureka Herald has only missed one issue being published, when in about 1870, a storm left five inches of snow covering the press, paper and type. Over the past 31-plus years, nearly 60 individuals have worked either full or part-time for the newspaper. The current staff includes Rhonda Hurley, Mary Fuhlhage, Jo Shughart, Darlene Denner, Sara Gulick and Tiffany Harrelson. Richard followed in the footsteps of his father, the late George H. Clasen, who was editor of one newspaper in Missouri and two newspapers in Kansas during his career. Both served as President of the Kansas Press Association. While in Eureka, he was a President of the Kansas Press Association (1988), the Fourth District Editor's Association, the Church Council of Christ Lutheran Church and the Eureka Kiwanis Club. He served a term on the Board of Directors of the Eureka Area Chamber of Commerce, was on Eureka USD 389 Steering Committee for the planning of both the new Eureka Junior/Senior High School and the new Marshall Elementary School, and served on a variety of other committees over the years. Clasen was also an active member of the National Newspaper Association, Sigma Delta Chi, Babson Midwest Memorial Foundation, Greenwood County Fair Association, the Eureka Downs Management Committee, the Board of Greenwood County Fair Association, the Kansas Quarter Horse Racing Association and was a Republican County Chairman when he lived in Yates Center. He also served as president for the Eureka Country Club and Kiwanis Club (2 years). He was an avid golfer, serving as the chairman of the KPA golf tournament as well as the Eureka Country Club. He loved to play cards, sing and was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church choir. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Tornado Booster Club. "Rock Chalk!" Need we say more? Above all, he loved his family and was proud of his childrens' accomplishments. He was a loving grandfather who was known to put pictures of his grandchildren on the front page of The Eureka Herald He is survived by his wife, Rachel, of the home; his mother, Margaret Clasen of Eureka; one brother, David Clasen of Seattle, Wash.; five children, Robert Clasen and his wife Kelly, of Belton, Mo., Kathy Schwar and husband Bill, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Shari Hendrickson and husband Jim of Overland Park, Becky Schultz and husband Tim of Park City, and Robin Clasen of Park City; 11 grandchildren, Laureese, Katrina, Marjorie, Robert, Cynthia, Josh, Jeff, Michael, James, Sarah, and Julianna; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Isaiah. He is preceded in death by his father, an infant sister and a daughter, Regina Alyse, who died at birth. Visitation will be held Friday, December 14, at the Koup Family Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka Junior/Senior High School Gymnasium in Eureka. Memorials have been established in his name to the Christ Lutheran Church of Eureka and Shiners Children's Hospital, and the Kansas Press Association Endowment Fund.
