Mr. Delp was born on the Cool Spring Farm in Churchville, MD to Richard Wills Delp Sr. and Mary Kathleen Greer Delp. He was the loving husband of Katherine Gallagher Delp and the husband of the late Serena Jane Mende Delp. He was the loving father of Edward "Brian" Delp (Lisa), Mary Jane Ashe (Wayne), William "Billy" Delp (Sherri), Melanie Goss (Gregory), and the late Richard "Gary" Delp (late Kathy). Mr. Delp was the grandfather of Daniel, Josh, Amanda, Aaron, Kristina, Nick, Meghan, Leah, Philip and Aidan, and great-grandfather of Charlotte, Archer, and Finley. He was the brother of the late Grover "Bud" Delp and Raymond "Arch" Archer. Mr. Delp was a 1947 graduate of Bel Air High School. He then attended Mercersburg Academy and University of Maryland College. He worked for his family business, Greer Transportation, when he was younger and then trained thoroughbred racehorses for over 30 years. He loved the race game and was well respected by everyone connected with racing and recognized by the number of Major races he won. His dedication and talent will be missed and may never come this way again. He enjoyed his yearly trips to Cancun and to Saratoga Springs. A viewing will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021, from 11:00 Am until 12:00 PM, at Zellman Funeral Home, P.A., 123 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD. Funeral services will begin at noon at the funeral home. His younger brother, Grover “Bud” Delp had started a race horse training operation in Maryland and Richard joined the team as his assistant trainer. The stable became very successful with many winners but one stood out named Spectacular Bid. While his brother Bud was campaigning Bid around the country Richard became the Maryland trainer for the horses. As the years went by Richard trained his own stable and had many winners. During the years for which Equibase statistics are available, Richard Delp won 1,030 of 6,570 races, his charges amassing more than $12.2 million in career earnings. He trained a half-dozen graded stakes winners during those years. The best of those runners included multiple graded winner Smart ‘N Noble, who won the 1995 Barbara Fritchie, then a Grade 2; Weather Vane, a 17-time winner who earned $724,532 in her career; Smart Alec, a Grade 3 winner who earned over $629,000 in his career; and Willard Scott, who made 105 starts between 1983 and 1989, winning multiple stakes along the way. Mr. Delp’s top five money earners during that period came from five different owners. Delp sent out his last starter, Merrily Ryder, to an eighth-place finish December 15, 2000. Many of Richard’s past employees noted what a nice man he was and enjoyable to work for. The family remembers: At 85 years old my Dad was wind surfing and drinking Margaritas in Mexico. On February 14, 2021 he celebrated his 90th Birthday with his favorite cake and chocolate ice cream. The very next day, February 15, he went to meet his first wife and son Gary. Richard had an amazing life and leaves a legacy of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved horse racing and was blessed to be involved in the business for over 30 years. He was well respected by others in the industry.
