Robert A. Whiteing (1908 - 1988)............................Robert A. Whiteing was born on a farm near Vail, Iowa, December 4, 1908, the son of Thomas and Hannah Loechner Whiteing. As a young boy, his family moved to a farm near Manilla where they resided until 1928, when they returned to the home place. He received his education in the rural schools near their home, Manilla, and attended the Vail High School. Following his education and prior to his marriage, he farmed with his father.....................................On June 1, 1935, Robert was united in marriage with Ruth Rollins at the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. This union was blessed with three children, Barbara, Donna and James. The Whiteings made their homes on farms in Crawford County until 1954, when they moved to Denison. After moving to Denison, Robert was employed at White Star Dairy, Crawford County Memorial Hospital and Midwestern College. From 1974 until 1985, Robert and Ruth operated The Whiteing Greenhouses at their home on South 15th Street...................................Robert had been in failing health for the past several years and in February of this year he moved to the Denison Care Center in Denison. ......................It... was there his death occurred Saturday afternoon, April 16, 1988. At the time of his passing, he had attained the age of 79 years, 4 months and 12 days.Through the years some of Robert's greatest joys were his family, farming, camping and fishing. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison where in past years he had served as a deacon and usher......................................Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, who died in infancy.....................................Survivors include his wife, Ruth Whiteing of Denison; three children, Barbara and her husband Russell Borkowski of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Donna Borgeson of Vail and James Whiteing and his wife Jolene of Schleswig; eight grandchilren, Dawn, Sandra, Connie, David, Karen, Renae, Cynthia and Katie; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, F. Earl Whiteing and his wife Opal of Vail; and his step mother-in-law, Leona Rollins of Denison. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Read less
