Ball, 75, of 710 Holden Drive, well-known educator, coach and high school athletic director, died unexpectedly Saturday in Ashtabula General Hospital. Ashtabula High School Robert A. Ball Gymnasium was named in his honor. Mr. Ball was born Nov. 1, 1907 in East Palestine, son of Stephen and Emma Gould Ball. He came to Ashtabula in 1931 as a teacher, and taught English and civics until his retirement in 1967. Mr. Ball graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance in 1930, where he was a four-letter man in sports. He was a member of the Mount Union College athletic hall of fame and a 50-year alumnus of the college. He received his master's degree in education from Kent State University. Mr. Ball coached football, basketball, track and golf during his years at Ashtabula High School. He was best known as Ashtabula High School's basketball coach, taking the 1947 high school basketball team to the state basketball finals. The teams he coached won over 75 percent of their games. During Mr. Ball's tenure as athletic director of Ashtabula High School, he was instrumental in the organization of the Northeast Ohio Conference and organized the city series for the four city high schools. Mr. Ball was a charter member and past president of the Northeastern Ohio Official's Association. He was past president and member of Ashtabula Area Teacher's Association. He was a member of Ashtabula County District Library board of trustees from 1968 to 1980. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula since 1931 where he was a member of the usher corps, communion board, and past member of the board of trustees and served as chairperson. He was a member of Ashtabula YMCA, well known for his participation in handball and swimming. He was an avid sportsman and traveler. Survivors include one daughter, the Rev. Sue B. Ralph of Akron; one son, Jeffrey B. Ball of Akron; three grandsons; two brothers, Nelson G. Ball of Naples, Fla., and Clayton Ball of Long Beach, N.C.; two sisters, Catherine C. Ball of Sebring and Emma Wirth of East Palestine; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Berry Ball in 1977.
