Description	:	Robert C. Fields, 98, formerly of Tipton and Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Maple Knoll Village in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a short illness. Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa State University Foundation, Fields Engineering Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2230, Ames, Iowa, 50010, in his memory. Robert Charles Fields was born August 18, 1920, in Tipton, the son of Forrest and Frieda (Werling) Fields. He was educated in the Tipton Consolidated Schools and graduated from Tipton High School in 1938. He worked the next three years at a local dry cleaning establishment. He married Velma Mae Ohlsen on October 26, 1941, at the First Methodist Church in Palmyra, Missouri. He was employed with AT&T Long Lines Division in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force as an Aviation Cadet and was called to active duty in January of 1943. He qualified for pilot training and graduated as a Pilot Second Lieutenant at Pecos, Texas in March of 1944. Later he was a Flight Instructor in the West Coast Flying Command, where he was assigned as a Flight Instructor for a squadron of Chinese pilots from Chiang Kai Shek's Air Force, instructing them in instrument flying and aerobatics before their return to China. Upon his discharge from the USAAF in October of 1945, he enrolled in engineering at Iowa State College and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in June of 1949. He was hired by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, where he worked for 36 years starting as a manufacturing trainee, until becoming Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. He served on the board from 1971 until 1985. He spent 13 years in the Crawfordsville, Indiana division as Division Director and then Vice-President of the Corporation in 1958. He was named Director of the Chicago Manufacturing Division in 1963 and in 1964, was assigned a sales division and became a member of General Management of the company, where he was in charge of all sales and manufacturing operations from 1974 to 1981, until retiring in 1982. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Iowa State University Foundation In 1971 and remained an Emeritus Member until his death. He received an engineering achievement award from Iowa State in 1983. He was a Director of the Indiana Manufacturing Association, Illinois State Chamber of Commerce and Junior Achievement of Chicago at various times during his years at Donnelley. He and Velma had a winter retirement home in the La Quinta, California Country Club and spent many winters there. He was President of the La Quinta Country Club in 1991 and 1992. He was elected a Director of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 1991 and played in the golf tournament for three years. He and Velma spent their summer retirement years at their home in Downers Grove, Illinois, until they moved to Oak Brook, Illinois in 1985, to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1990, to Colorado Springs in 1995, and then to Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Velma preceded him in death on October 6, 2006. He married Marianne (White) Moon in January 2009. He enjoyed many wonderful vacation experiences with his family, fishing and visiting many of our national parks. He felt he had the opportunity to work with the finest people in the world, his fellow employees, his customers and suppliers. He felt deeply of the strong support Velma gave him throughout his career and during his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Marianne; one son, Michael (Lewanda) Fields of Laporte, CO; one daughter-in-law, Laura Fields of Adams, WI; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ann (John) Edge of Cave Creek, AZ, and Carol Jean Fields of Tipton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Velma, one son, David Fields, one sister, Mary Jean Hammer and five brothers, Henry, John, Richard, Keith and James Fields. Fry Funeral Home
