A private family graveside service will precede the service at 1 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery, Palouse. Mr. West died on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at the Pullman Regional Hospital in Pullman. Bob was born March 12, 1924, in Spokane, Wash., to J. B. and Olga (Batten) West. He attended school in Palouse and graduated from Palouse High School in 1942. He joined the Army and served in the European Theater and was part of the invasion on Utah Beach on D-Day during World War II. After the war he returned to Palouse. He married Frances Simon on Sept. 21, 1947, in Palouse. The couple operated West's Food City grocery store from 1946 to 1989, when Bob retired. Bob was a member of the Palouse Federated Church, a charter member of the Palouse Lions Club, and a member of the American Legion-Hayton Post No. 55. Bob enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. Bob also enjoyed the history of Palouse and published the book "Hills of Home". Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Frances West, of Palouse, one son, Dale West and his wife Lei Lani, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two daughters, Sharon Ostrow and husband Robert, of Bellingham, Wash., Nancy Gonzales and husband Steven, of Orcutt, Calif.; and one sister Dorris Goodrich, of Santa Barbara, Calif. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to the Community Center Building Fund, Box 23, Palouse, WA 99161, or to the Palouse Museum, Whitman County Historical Society, Box 67, Colfax, WA 99111.
