Robert Dean “Bob” Bossman of Hartford, SD died on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Home in Canistota, just five days shy of his 87th birthday. Visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home - Hartford Chapel, 600 S. Western Ave., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Hartford United Methodist Church with burial to follow at the Hartford Cemetery. He was born to Justus and Roberta Bossman at the family farm, near Davis, in Turner County on April 5, 1931. He attended rural schools and high school at Beresford, graduating in 1949. He married Virginia Elaine Bartel on July 15, 1951, at Olivet. The couple farmed in the Hartford-Humboldt area until moving to a huge Victorian-era home with big wrap-around porch on Main Street in Hartford in 1959. They had nine children, Gerry, Linda, Bill, Karen, Sharon, Kevin, Dennis, Deb and Jeff. Bob once said that his life was a blur for 30 years following the birth of their children until the last one left home. Bob and Virginia followed their children’s and grandchildren’s sports year around. Bob continued the tradition with the great-grandchildren. But his support of youth athletics wasn’t limited just to family. He thoroughly enjoyed West Central athletics and rode his electric scooter from his home near the high school to football and basketball games, volleyball matches as well as track meets. Bob was an athlete in his own right. He was a standing broad jump champion at his school and played football for the Beresford Watchdogs. In addition to his love of all sports, including his love/hate relationship with the Minnesota Vikings, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading the newspaper. Much to the chagrin of his children, Bob took his fashion cues from no one. His signature every day look was all his -- a plain pocketed T-shirt designed by the Dearborn Michigan fashion house Carthartt, and a pair of comfy blue jeans. Bob would change it up a bit varying the color of the shirt from gray, to dark green to dull blue. The family would buy him new shirts, which had to have the pocket for his reading glass, new coats, new sweatshirts and pants year around, but Bob preferred his old standbys. Bob was a hard worker who for nearly all his career punched a time clock. He told his children his wish for them in life was to have careers where they didn’t have to punch the clock. They obliged. He worked for Nash Finch Grocery Warehouse for 10 years, the Greenley Packing Plant for 15 years and Lakeside Dairy for 14 years, retiring in 1993. He often held second and third jobs including as a janitor at the Hartford United Methodist Church, truck driver, school bus driver, and bookkeeper for the Bossman’s restaurant, The Treat Stop in Hartford. Bob and Virginia did all they could to give back to the community of Hartford. In the 1970s, they held children’s games at the Treat Stop during the annual Hartford Jamboree Days, a tradition that continued for many years. Bob and Virginia were named king and queen of Jamboree Days in Hartford in the 1990s. Following Virginia’s death, the family continued the legacy of children’s games during the town’s annual celebration calling them Virginia’s Games. Bob was a member of the Hartford United Methodist Church, the West Central Booster Club, Hartford Senior Citizen’s Center and the Hartford Commercial Club. In 2002, Bob received the West Central Outstanding Community-Alumni Service Award. Grateful for having shared his life are his nine children: Gerry Bossman and his wife, Patsy, Hartford, SD, Linda Lueth and her husband, Charles, Humboldt, SD; Bill Bossman and his wife, Shaw Mei, Las Vegas, NV, Sharon Litka and her husband, Dennis, Sutherland, IA, Karen Bossman, Watertown, SD, Kevin Bossman and his wife, Donna, Sturgis, SD, Dennis Bossman and his wife, Della, Humboldt SD, Deb Holland and her husband, Jim, Sturgis, SD and Jeff Bossman, Colton, SD; 18 grandchildren: Ben (Melissa) Lueth, Andy (Amber) Lueth, Emily (Dustin) Sadnick, Ryan (Kelcie) Bossman, Tiffany Bossman, Cody Bossman, Amanda Litka, Jason Bossman, Samantha Bossman, Morgan (Katlin) Svingen, Jackie Bossman, Alyssa Bossman, Breanna Bossman, Aaron (Elizabeth) Holland, Matthew Holland, Summer Bossman, Bridget Bossman, and Laurie Bossman; eight great-grandchildren: Katelyn, Natalie, Kynzie, Aiden, Addison, Cooper, Theo and Weston; three siblings: Darlene (Chuck) Jones, Sioux Falls, SD, Betty (George) Lyons, Canfield, OH and Lloyd (Linda) Bossman, Ogden, UT; special friend, Connie Andal, Parker, SD; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Bob is preceded in death by his parents: Justus and Roberta Bossman; wife, Virginia (Bartel) Bossman, Virginia died Feb. 7, 1999, the couple had been married 47-1/2 years upon her death, two brothers: Jim and Donnie Bossman and an infant sister, Carla Sue Bossman. - George Boom Funeral Home
