Pastor Inez Foster officiated with interment in the Union Cemetery. Robert Dean Classen, son of Jacob and Margaret (Ward) Classen, was born December 2, 1927 at Spencer, NE. He attended Spencer High School, graduating in 1945. Bob was married to Darlene Marie Kayl on February 9, 1948 at Bristow, NE. Nine children were born to them: Vicky, Debbie, Kevin, Steve, Kathy, Kent, Kyle, Karla and Kelly. Bob grew up on the family farm northeast of Spencer. After marrying Darlene, they moved to a stone house 2 miles west of where Bob grew up, and later moved to the family farm 2 miles northeast of Spencer where they raised 9 children. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and also a member of the Lions Club, School Board, Farmer's Union Elevator Board and served as County Supervisor for many years. Bob was involved in the Spencer Community Club and was instrumental in getting the first school buses for District #17. He was also one of the first landowners in Boyd County to have center pivot irrigation. Bob taught country school at District 52 north of Spencer for one year right out of high school graduation after obtaining his teaching certificate from the State of Nebraska. Bob died October 1, 2009 at Butte Healthcare Center at the age of 81 years, 9 months. Survivors include his children and their spouses; 21 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers. Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Darlene, parents Jacob and Margaret, brother, James, sister, Beth Rose and granddaughter Karlee Classen. permission from the editor at Spencer Advocate
