Burial followed at the Otis Cemetery. Robert Edward Muchow was born on May 21, 1914, in the township of Oak Creek, Nebraska, to Otto and Sadie Muchow. His parents would move to a farm 5 miles North and 2 miles West of Otis in 1918. Then they would move to a small house on Dade Street in Otis where they would raise seven children: Ruby Blanche, Robert Edward, Randall Henry, Roberta Davida, and Renata Loel, all of which are now deceased and Ruth Gesine Springer of Lasalle, Colorado, and Rozetta Ann Anderson of Otis, Colorado. Robert often recalled fond memories of his childhood, referring to his mother, Sadie as his "best friend" and a person who knew how to take care of herself and could do anything. Although, Otto, his father was in the transportation business, Robert recalls that he was a "terrible driver," remembering an experience when Otto and Sadie took all their kids on a trip in their Model-T complete with a tent to Estes Park. Highway 34 was at that time a one-way dirt road and the car coming down the hill had the right of way. Robert was surprised that they lived through those times, but they all did and quite successfully. Robert graduated as his class valedictorian in May 1932, from Otis High School and then attended one year of college at Hebron College and one semester at UNC in Greeley. Robert Edward Muchow married Doris Lenora Sehl on January 22, 1939, at the St. Paul Lutheran church in Otis, Colorado. Robert recalls that they simply stood up in front of the minister, Rev Amelong, and were married with his brother, Randall and sister, Ruth as the witnesses. Robert rented a car from the Etter garage and the couple drove to Denver and stayed at the Standish Hotel for two nights where they enjoyed dinner and a movie. Robert worked with Bert McKenzie and his son, Lauren Jay at the First National Bank of Otis. Doris worked part-time at the post office. Robert and Doris were at church when news came of the Pearl Harbor invasion. Robert recalls that he thought the world would never be the same again. Doris told Robert that when his draft number came up that she would take his job in the bank. Robert was in the U.S. Army Finance Division for three and one-half years (1942-1945) as a Staff Sergeant attached to the 97th Infantry Division and served in the European Theatre. Robert felt that freedom was a very valuable right, was proud to serve his country, and always displayed the flag. After the war, Robert would return home to raise his own family. Family was very important to Robert and he enjoyed his three children, remarking that "each one was very different": Mary Ann lives in Estes Park, Ruth Ellen and her husband, Roger Lipker live in Boulder, and Paul Robert and his wife Pat live in Estes Park. The three children graduated from Otis High School and were confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran church. Later on, Robert and Doris would enjoy their four grandchildren: Kimberly Ann, Karen Elizabeth, Ryan Patrick, and Philip Andrew. They spent many hours being baby sitters, having big family reunion parties, and one special time, taking the entire family to Hawaii for a vacation. Robert felt very lucky in having three great grandchildren by his granddaughter, Kim married to Bruce Becker: Anna Doris, Alexander Roger, and Emma Elizabeth. When they came to visit him, he was quite happy and when they left, he slept for days!! Robert with his wife, Doris would realize an accomplishment of a variety of business ventures. From the banking business, Robert purchased the Washington County Abstract office in Akron, Colorado. And in later years, together with his son, the Platte Valley Title Insurance Company in Sterling, Colorado. Until the age of 90, Robert commuted to Sterling to work as an abstractor at this office, now Stewart Title Insurance. Robert and Doris also purchased farm ground through the years and did custom wheat farming. Robert was a realtor for many years and the couple also owned and operated the Otis Insurance Agency. Doris ran this business until her death in October, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Robert and Doris were married for 58 years. Doris is buried in the Otis cemetery and Robert is buried next to her. Robert and his family were very active in many school, church, and community clubs, organizations, and events. Robert was the Town of Otis mayor several times and at one time the mayor of Akron. He served on the old Washington County High School Board for eight years and Otis School Board for twelve years. Robert also served on the Otis Town Council for twelve years, the Y-W Water Board for twenty-five years, and the Washington County Planning Council. Robert was a volunteer of the Otis Fire Department and belonged to the V.F.W. and Lions Club for many, many years. Robert had a deep and abiding faith in the universe that all would turn out for the best. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Otis and there he would serve as a Sunday School teacher, on the Church Council for twenty-five years, and the Lutheran Church and Parsonage Building Committee. Robert was very proud that the new church building was totally paid for as it was built. He related the stories many times of how he could just call someone and they would bring over necessary equipment or man-power to complete work projects. There were no loans on that building project. Robert believed that the key to good health and longevity was that one should remain active and busy and stay interested in life. After work and school, he and the family would work in the yard, raising and canning their own vegetables from a large garden. At one time, Robert owned and operated the Sun Theater in Otis, this building site would later become the Otis Insurance Agency. In 1945, Robert and Doris purchased season tickets to the CU football games which Robert attended until late last season. In the 50's, the couple began to take short vacations with their kids to Estes Park and in the fall of 1992 purchased a vacation home there. During his later years, Robert remained very active and enjoyed projects with his house and yard in Otis and spending time in the sun with his good ole cat, Sylvester on his patio and the many, many good friends he had there. Although his heart always remained in Otis, he also liked the time he spent at his place in Estes. There he took his faithful dog, Buddy for walks around the lake, went for drives in the mountains and enjoyed sitting on his deck in the sun surrounded by his vegetable and flower container gardens. Robert had a very rich and full life experience, but was an extremely simple person who strove to take responsibility for himself. Everyone who met him will always remember Robert as a sweet and gentle man with a great amount of dignity who showed us all how to grow old gracefully. Robert passed away peacefully of natural causes, late evening, October 1, 2007. He is now resting in peace at the Otis Cemetery, Otis, Colorado.
