Obituary from The New Era, Formosa, Jewell Co., KS, 13 November 1924: Robert Elias Pantier was born at Petersburg, Illinois, July 24, 1847; passed away at his home in Formosa, Kansas, Friday, November 7th, 1924, after an illness of five weeks. He was united in marriage to Effie S. Clary at Lewis, Cass County, Iowa, October 19th, 1868. To this union, nine children were born, four of whom died in infancy. The children who survived him are: Cora Bartlett of Wichita, Kansas, Anna M. Temple, Mankato, Kansas, A. E. Pantier, Mankato, Kansas, W. L. Pantier, Los Angeles, California, and Minnie M. Bonecutter, Humboldt, Kansas,--all of whom were at his bedside during his illness except his son W. L. Pantier who was unable to come. Also with him were his devoted wife, his brother J. T. Pantier of Formoso, Kansas, and S. B. Pantier of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and his sister, Mrs. Laura Clary. In 1871 he, with his father, mother, brothers, and sisters came to Kansas making the trip overland, and here he took a homestead three miles northwest of where Formoso now stands. Here he with his young wife fought the battles and endured the hardships associated with pioneer life, and together with his neighbors through privations and many times through want and suffering helped to make Jewell County what it is today. He taught one of the first District schools in Jewell County and took an active part in school and church work. Although naturally quiet and retiring nature he had the true courage that holds out under the greatest difficulties. In November 1886 he left the homestead temporarily and moved his family to Anthony, Kansas that his children might have the advantages of better schooling. His wife died at that place in 1894 and he filled the place of both father and mother to his children for twelve years. He returned to Jewell County in 1899 and has since that time made his home there. He was united in marriage to Eunice E. Case August 3rd, 1905 at Dekalb, Illinois, who was his faithful helpmate during his declining years. In his early boyhood he became a Christian and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and lived a consistent religious life to the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, five children, thirteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, three brothers, three sisters, and many other relatives. Contributor: Bill Herrman
