He farmed with his father, then moved to New London, Iowa, where he worked at the Iowa Ammunition Plant. Moriah United Methodist Church at an early age. In 1966, he graduated from Scotland County R-1 High School. He farmed with his father, then moved to New London, Iowa, where he worked at the Iowa Ammunition Plant. He was working as a carpenter for the Blint Construction Company, when he was inducted into the Army in April 1969. He graduated from Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, on June 6, 1969. Robert was transferred to Ft. Riley, Kansas. Robert is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Durham; one brother, Wayne Lee Durham; one sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Leroy Robinson; one nephew, Kerry Leroy Durham; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Durham and Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Sweeney; one great great grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Kinney; and many aunts and uncles and cousins. He left us on Thursday evening, June 18, 1970, at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church, Scotland County, Missouri, Wednesday, June 24, at 3 p.m. The Rev. John O. Gooch officiated. Burial was in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Body bearers were Jack March, Jody Lancaster, John March, Gary Dieterich, Gene Eggleston, and Gary Mitchell. Memphis Democrat - Memphis, Missouri - July 2, 1970 ed. - P5, C3 Arbela Soldier Dies After Accident Specialist 4 Robert E. Durham, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Durham of north of Arbela, died Friday about 5 p.m. near Ft. Riley, Kansas, according to a War Department telegram received by his parents, evidence indicates that he was traveling over an access road, near the Kansas River on a motorcycle, which he owned, when he either lost control or lost sight of the access road, and drove over a 24 foot embankment, coming to rest on the shore of the Kansas River at the point of impact. The motorcycle was totally demolished. Medical examination shows that he suffered a skull fracture and there was some water in his lungs. This would indicate that he may have died of the head injuries or he may have drowned while unconscious, as a result of the head injury. The approximate time of death was given between 11 p.m., June 18, 1970 and 7 a.m., June 19, 1970. His body was found about 4 p.m. June 19, 1970, by a fisherman.
