Rob was born Feb. 14, 1923, to Ernest J. and Ann Hoegner Heil, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 18, 1947, he and Natalie Gregg were married at Market Street Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Arthur Romig, and have been blessed with a loving journey together for 65 years. Rob graduated from Lima Central High School in 1941, and received a baccalaureate degree from DePauw University in 1947. His college years were interrupted two months after Pearl Harbor when he enlisted in the Marines. After completing boot-camp training, the Navy transferred him to reserve officers training. Assigned to a new missile launching rocket, he then served in the Pacific Theater in World War II, from 1943 to 1946. The experience gained on this ship prompted his recall by the Navy to the Korean War. This ship was assigned to work with the British Royal Navy from 1950 to 1953. He always said that one of the benefits of his military and college life, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, were the friends he made then, and kept for the rest of his life. Returning to a lifelong residency in Lima, Rob continued his asphalt-paving company for 40 years. During this time the ecologic action of enzymes and its use as an agent for soil control, cleaning and deodorizing, attracted and directed his attention to the manufacturing, marketing, and application of liquid enzyme products for industrial, medical, and dental markets until his retirement. Rob's growing-up years were centered around family-lineage and commitment to the First Evangelical and Reformed Church. After his marriage and military service, he then became a member of Market Street Presbyterian Church and was active as a youth leader, a trustee, a deacon and an elder. Community life included his becoming a charter-member of the Shawnee Volunteer Fire Department, a past-member of Kiwanis and a 32nd Degree Mason. For 35 years, he served as a member of the board of directors of the Citizens Building & Loan Co. At the invitations of the Secretary of the Navy and Adm. Robert J. Wellander, he attended several symposiums on the Global Strategy Discussions held annually at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and completed several brief assignments. Considered his greatest treasure was the time Rob spent at home with his family and friends. For many years at home included a horse or two in his barn, and always at home in the company of a beloved German shepherd. Other pleasures were tennis, reading, sailing, writing and welcoming the many feathered and various furry-tailed creatures who have established residence in his back yard and woods. Survivors include his wife, Natalie; three sons and a daughter, Gregg (Dede) Heil, of St. Louis, Timothy (Melanie) Heil, of Columbus, Ann (Matt) Matrka, of Columbus, and the Rev. Dr. David (Christina) Heil, of Grand Lake, Colo.; his grandchildren are Abigail (Jamie ) Drew, of Hilton Head, S.C., Rachel Heil, of Chicago, Robert Heil and William Heil, of Columbus, and Mollie, Hannah, Ben and Tad Heil, of Grand Lake, Colo.; his sister, Nan Roess, of Lima; his brother, Gene Heil, preceded him in death; a niece, Jane (Roess) Livermore; and nephews, Steve Roess, Will (Becky) Roess, Christian Heil, David F. Heil and James Heil also survive. The family wishes to express gratitude to the extraordinary and loving care they have received from St.Rita's Home Healthcare, Shawnee Manor and St. Rita's Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 23, at Market Street Presbyterian Church, with military rites. The Rev. Dottie Kaiser. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel, and one hour before the service April 23, in the Williamsburg Room of the church.
