Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mason City with Revs. John Lewis and Henry Duerksen officiating. Burial was in the Mason City Cemetery. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 8, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mason City with Revs. John Lewis and Henry Duerksen officiating. Burial was in the Mason City Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, May 7, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Robert "Jeff" Burns was born July 4, 1926 at Mason City to Glen and Edith (Smith) Burns. He lived in the Mason City area all of his life. Mr. Burns attended country grade school, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1944. After his schooling, he worked on the railroad and at the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant in Grand Island. In December of 1945, he entered the U.S. Army and served most of his time in Korea. After his discharge from the service in 1947, he joined his older brother, Joel "Ike" Burns, in the filling station and tank wagon business in Mason City. On June 17, 1950, he was married to Vivian Fox and they made their home at Mason City. Mr. Burns farmed and raised livestock. Mr. Burns was a member of the Mason City School Board for over 25 years, serving most of that time as president. He was a member of the Algernon Township board, was a life time member of Legion Post 142 at Mason City, and was a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Mason City, sons; Steve Burns of Alexandria, Va., Byron Burns of Litchfield, and Mark Burns of Kearney, daughters; Theodocia Fitch of Des Moines, Ia., and Kimberley Burns of Houston, ex., three grandchildren; Nick, Scott, and Michelle Burns, and one sister, Patty Nelson of Broken Bow. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brothers, Joel "Ike" Burns, and one sister, Shirley Cox. Govier Brother Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.
