Born in Bourbon to George and Cecil Mae GRIFFITH BURWELL, he married Ida Kathryn MOORE June 20, 1943, at Burton United Methodist Church, west of Rochester. She died July 21, 2001. Bob enjoyed a 41-year teaching career, which began in Lapaz, where he taught and coached. He then taught at the Rochester School Corp. for 33 years. His Rochester tenure included teaching in the former Lincoln Grade School. He was principal at Rochester Junior High from 1957-1968. At his request, he was then reassigned as an elementary teacher. He concluded his educational career as a fourth-grade teacher at Columbia Elementary School, retiring in 1981. Bob was a graduate of Bourbon High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Wabash College. He earned a master of science degree in education from Indiana University. He was stationed at Camp Atterbury while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. His memberships included Burton United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa, Indiana State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Rochester Classroom Teachers Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 47 and Rochester Rotary Club, from which he earned the coveted Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Bob was an athlete as a young man, excelling in basketball and football. He loved watching a variety of sporting events. He enjoyed travel and fishing. He can be best remembered for his uncanny storytelling. Bob never met a stranger he couldn't talk to. Survivors include his daughter, Rev. Susanne BURWELL, Monona, Wisc.; three nieces, Kathryn FROEBE, Fort Wayne, Sandra BREWER and husband Ron, Fort Wayne, Pat STEWART and husband Bob, Granger; five nephews, Jim MOORE and wife Jane, Delphi, Joe MOORE and wife Terry, Rochester, John MOORE and wife Nancy, Rochester, Jack MOORE and wife Sandy, Phoenix, Ariz., and Jim SWANK, Sparks, Nev. Several great-nieces and great-nephews, numerous great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, cousins and special caregiver Diane SNOOK, Claypool, also survive. Preceding in death with his wife were his parents and three sisters, Frances, Abbie and Ruth [BURWELL]. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with Rev. Will LAWSON and Rev. Laurence SMITH officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Visitation is noon-2 p.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan St., Warsaw, and 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour prior to services. Memorials may be made to Burton United Methodist Church or Wabash College.
