Smyth was born January 28, 1869, in Kendrick twp., Greene Co., Iowa, and died at his home south of Churdan, May 14th, 1921, at the age of 51 years, 3 months and 16 days. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alec Smyth. He was married August 27, 1890, to Irene Wright, who died February 3rd, 1893. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Marsh. He was united in marriage October 23, 1898, to Mary Silbaugh. To this union was born a daughter, Grace, and a son, Bernard. Mr. Smyth had not been enjoying the best of health for about a year, and had been planning for the comfort of his family when he would be gone. He planted corn on Friday and Saturday evening was in town and was feeling about as good as usual. He returned home and at half past ten was sticken with a sort of paralysis and sat in a chair for about an hour, when he became very sick and friends carried him to his bed where he passed away at about twelve-thirty o'clock. He passed away as he had planned to go. Mr. Smyth was a splendid Christian man. He preached the gospel for several years, but gave up the ministry and has lived on his farm south of town for a number of years. He was ready to answer the call of his Master. He had realized for some time that he might be called home suddenly, altho he was able to cary on his work on the farm. His death came as a great shock to his wife and children, even tho they had expected the end to come in some such way. He was a faithful member of the Free Methodist church at this place, and he will be missed in the church as well as by his family, relatives and friends. His daughter, Miss Grace, who is attending college at Greenville, Illinois, was notified of her father's death and Thomas McGhee went to St. Louis to accompany her home. He leaves to mourn his death, a beloved wife, two daughters and one son; five sisters--Mrs. Francis Clipperton, Ontario, California; Mrs. William Clipperton, Churdan; Mrs. Jesse Flack, Jefferson; Mrs. Frank Stotts, Pine River, Minnesota; Mrs. Henry Willard, Jefferson; and also a large circle of friends. We would join the host of friends in extending sympathy to the family in their sad bereavement. A good man has answered the call and has gone home to Heaven, where pain and sorrow is unknown. There he will wait the coming of his loved ones. The funeral service was held at the Free Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Sager, of McPherson, Kansas. The remains were laid to rest in the Churdan cemetery. [Robert's daughter by his first marriage, Nellie Marsh, died in Los Angeles, California 12/28/1971.]
