"Bob" Crandell, 73, a lifetime resident of Wenatchee, WA, died Sunday morning, March 21, 2004, at Central Washington Hospital. He was born May 23, 1930, to Carl H. and Leila M. (Hartley) Crandell in Wenatchee. The family made their first home in Wenatchee on Monitor Street. He attended Stevens Elementary, H.B. Ellison Junior High School, and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1948. While in high school, he played the trombone in the WHS marching band. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for six years in the Navy Reserves, including active duty in the Korean Conflict. He entered Wenatchee Valley College in 1954, graduating in 1956. He was instrumental in forming the Wenatchee Valley College Knightmares Pep Band, and led this group to the Potato Bowl in Bakersfield, CA in the fall of 1955. He continued his education at the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in Business in 1958. Bob returned to his home in Wenatchee and joined his father in the family business, Crandell Fruit Company, in the Sunnyslope area. On November 21, 1959, he married Kay Knowles in Wenatchee. They made their home on the orchard property on Lower Sunnyslope Road. Bob was actively involved in many fruit industry associations including Grower's Clearing House, the Wenatchee Traffic Association, and the International Apple Institute Association. He took pride in the high quality of the fruit packed under the Crandell Fruit Company label, Top Color. He was extremely honored when his industry named him Apple Citizen of the Year in 1994. Bob and Kaytie enjoyed several community clubs together, including Active 20-30 Club, where he and served as president and district governor, the Wenatchee Applarians, Wenatchee Sports Car Club, and the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club. He served on the Apple Blossom Festival board and was appointed Director General of the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival for 1977-1978. He also was a member of BPOE#1186 and the American Legion Post #10. Bob and Kaytie enjoyed golfing, fishing, snowmobiling, traveling, snow and water skiing, car racing, and sports of all kinds. Bob was a very skilled craftsman and one of his greatest accomplishments was when he and his father, Carl, built a 33 foot cabin cruiser that they appropriately named the "Cloud Nine." Bob's pride and joy were his three girls, Darcy, Debbie, and Dana, who later brought into his life five wonderful grandchildren. The entire family enjoyed many hours together at their summer home on Lake Chelan and traveling together. Bob lived every minute to the fullest and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife, Kaytie, of the home; two daughters, Debbie and her husband Will Marlow and their children, Robert, Kylan, and Nicolle, of Renton, Dana and her husband Victor Kapusta and their children, Alexander and Caitlin, of Easton, Maryland; his sister, Sandra and her husband Steve Still, East Wenatchee; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and in 1979 by a daughter, Darcy. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 25, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 941 Washington St, Wenatchee. Concluding services and the interment will follow in the Wenatchee Cemetery. Visitation will be at Telford's Chapel of the Valley on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Those who wish may make memorials to the Alzeimer's Research Program at the University of Washington, Box 356560, Seattle, WA, 98195. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
