Johnston was born in Pittsburg, Penn., Dec. 14th, 1831, and died at his home 1 1/2 miles north of Birmingham, Thursday, Aug. 13, 1914, at 8 p.m., aged 82 years and 7 months, after an illness of several months with a complication of diseases incident to old age and army service. Johnston was born in Pittsburg, Penn., Dec. 14th, 1831, and died at his home 1 1/2 miles north of Birmingham, Thursday, Aug. 13, 1914, at 8 p.m., aged 82 years and 7 months, after an illness of several months with a complication of diseases incident to old age and army service. Sept. 16th, 1852, he was united in marriage at Birmingham, Penn., to Hannah Shepler, who passed to her reward Feb. 22, 1912. In the fall of 1854 they came to Iowa, residing for one year near Davenport. In 1855 they moved to Van Buren county, and for more than twenty years resided in the vicinity of Utica. In 1875 he moved to Jefferson county on a farm on the county-line road, 1 1/2 miles north of Birmingham, where he resided nearly thirty-seven years. August 21st, 1862, he enlisted in Company 1, Nineteenth Iowa infantry under J.S. Ragsdale recruiting officer, afterward captain of the company, and served until the close of war as base drummer of the regiment and giving the drum he carried all the time to his grandson Robert H., it containing one of the original heads, of which he is justly proud. (Missing part) in Van Buren and Jefferson counties (illegible) than "Uncle Bobby, " and he was always ready and willing to go wherever called with the old drum and cheer the boys with his martial music, and on Memorial day was always loyal to his old comrades in this neighborhood, never having missed until May 30, 1914, when illness prevented. He united with Presbyterian church of Birmingham in February, 1892, and was a consistent member and regular attendant, sickness alone preventing. In politics he was a stalwart republican, voting that ticket from the formation of the party, and the weather was never too bad for him to go to the polls. Of his children, five are left to mourn his death, Carrie dying at the age of 9 years; two sons, William H. and Reuben reside in this vicinity; Mrs. Margaret Dirkhart near Cantril, Mrs. A.C. Parker of Derby, Iowa, and Miss Mary who resides on the home place and for many years has faithfully and tenderly cared for the mother and father who have gone to their heavenly home. There are twenty-three grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Presbterian (sic) church Saturday at 2 p.m., in charge of Rev. Cassat, assisted by Rev. McNary, and a large attendance of his old comrades, neighbors and friends were present to pay their last respects. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers and he was laid to rest in the Birmingham cemetery beside the wife, who had been a true helpmate and companion for more than sixty years.--Birmingham Enterprise.
