Description	:	The dreaded visitor, Death, called last week Friday at one of the homes of our town and took away with him an inmate in the person of Robert Shields. Mr Shields was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1864 and emigrated to Quebec, Canada when he was nine years of age. In 1881 he entered the Military School of Quebec from which institution he graduated with honors. After graduating, he joined A Battery and was soon sent to quell the Northwest rebellion in 1885. Mr Shields was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1864 and emigrated to Quebec, Canada when he was nine years of age. In 1881 he entered the Military School of Quebec from which institution he graduated with honors. After graduating, he joined A Battery and was soon sent to quell the Northwest rebellion in 1885. This was a most severe campaign and it was undertaken and carried out in the winter and spring of that year, a winter noted for its severity. Mr Shields says that often the cavalrymen would come into camp with fingers, ears and toes frozen from exposure across the prairie. After the rebellion was quelled he returned east and was honorably discharged. He moved to the United States and made his home in Newport, Vermont where he worked in the car department of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. He was afterwards engaged by the Boston & Maine Railroad in the same capacity with headquarters in Lyndonville, Vermont. Here he remained till his health failed some six years ago. Specialists in Boston and the hospitals seemed unable to control the disease. He wasted away and finally breathed his last at his home in Ashland, Friday, September 2. The funeral was from the Methodist Church Sunday. Mt. Prospect Lodge, A F & A M performed their impressive service both at the church and the grave. Interment was at Green Grove Cemetery. Mr Shields leaves a widow and brother, Mr William Shields of Boston, Massachusetts, to mourn their loss. The suffering which he endured was severe but bourne with Christian patience and fortitude. "There the wicked cease from trembling,And the weary are at rest." The Ashland Citizen, September 3, 1904, p5. The above verse is from Job 3-17 and is a common verse found on tombstones.
