Following the service there will be a reception at noon at 519 Denver St., Sterling. Robert John Ruff was born in Riverton, Wyo., on April 29, 1927, to George and Mary K. (Foos) Ruff. He was the eighth of nine children. Shortly after Bob was born, the family moved to Mitchell, Nebraska, where he resided until the age of 11. The Ruff family then moved to Sterling, where Bob has remained a lifetime resident. Robert met Patricia Eddy in 1947 and the two married in 1951. To this marriage was born five children. Pat fondly recalls Bob changing hundreds of diapers and rocking babies so often that the rocking chair wore a permanent groove in the floor. He and Pat loved their family and worked hard to make sure they were well taken care of. From the time he was a child he spent long hours working on the family farm and took great pride in his work. He especially loved sugar beet harvest and would enjoy sharing many stories of the "early days" of beet harvest. He described how he, his brothers and father would use teams of large workhorses for beet harvest. It was tedious, backbreaking work, but he always recalled these times with great fondness. His strong work ethic was passed on to all five of his children, and he taught his three sons all he knew about farming. And just like him, his sons started farming at an early age also. He was a good teacher, with as much patience as a father could have with five children! Bob had a positive attitude about everything, and he always stressed that it was important to never give up. It was also very important to him that all who were involved always knew that he was "in charge!" He loved to be "The Boss"! Bob and Pat also loved to travel and one of their favorite scenic routes was driving up the west side of Idaho. Together over the years, they traveled many miles and saw many beautiful sights. They met many interesting people and always had many stories to tell when they returned home. Robert was a former Elks Lodge member and he and his sons also received the award for Top Sugar Growers for Great Western Sugar Company in years past. Bob was also a fan of Charles M. Russell. He enjoyed his paintings because of their portrayal of the west, and of simpler times. Bob shared Charlie Russell's love for horses as well. He loved anything that had to do with horses, and had such respect for these beautiful animals. Robert is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Ruff; and his children, Mark Ruff, Fred Ruff, John Ruff and wife Lynnette, Jeni Porter and husband Greg, all of Sterling, Chris Campbell and husband Barry of Highlands Ranch. He is also survived by two sisters, Martha Eisele of Garden City, Kan., and Helen Morris and husband George of York, Pa. Grandchildren are Dan and Sarah Ruff, Verity Porter of Sterling, and Josh Bondegard of Highlands Ranch. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert "Bob" Ruff Memorial Fund.
