Robert, with his brother, Thomas, 15 years old, had gone to a field a mile from their home after a load of hay. They had just finished loading hay onto the rack and Thomas was still on the stack. Robert, who was on the load, picked up the reins. As he did so, he unwittingly kicked the shotgun which stood in an upright position in front of the rack. There was a deafening report and Robert toppled over dead. The shot had struck him squarely in the face. After one frantic look at the prostrate body of his brother, Thomas ran across the field to the nearest house, the home of his uncle, Peter Koerber, where he poured out his incoherent story. Mr. Koerber took the body in his automobile to the Werner home. There Dr. G. W. Sulllivan, summoned from St. Edward, advised that it be removed to the Kennedy undertaking establishment in St. Edward. As they were starting on the drive to the village, they met the boy's mother and other members of the family returning home from church and there in the road the mother first learned of Robert's death. Robert was a son of Mrs. Anna Werner, widow of Henry Werner, and mother of ten children. Except several older ones who are married, the children all lived with their mother on a farm four miles east and one mile south of st. Edward. The father, who was a prominent Woodville township farmer, died during the influenza epidemic in 1918. The shotgun which the boys had taken with them on their drive to the field in hopes of seeing a rabbit or a prairie chicken was an old single barreled hammer gun. It is believed Robert's foot struck the hammer as he reached for the reins. The accident happened in Platte county and the facts of the accident were telephoned to County Attorney Walter by Dr. Sullivan of St. Edward. Mr. Walter announced there would be no inquest as it was plainly an accident. The funeral was held from the Catholic church in St. Edward yeterday morning at 10 o'clock.
