Description	:	Bob Withrow loved baseball from an early age. He played baseball and basketball in school and was a standout even though he was the shortest member of the team. He played Junior American Legion baseball on the local team that made it to the National level at the Kansas City games. As a young man, Bob joined his brother Kenyon in working with the U.S. Geodetic Survey before joining the Navy during WWII. Read More	Bob Withrow loved baseball from an early age. He played baseball and basketball in school and was a standout even though he was the shortest member of the team. He played Junior American Legion baseball on the local team that made it to the National level at the Kansas City games. As a young man, Bob joined his brother Kenyon in working with the U.S. Geodetic Survey before joining the Navy during WWII. After his discharge, Bob attended Appalachian Teachers College where he played baseball, earned a teaching degree, and where he met his future wife, Erma Norris. Before marrying Erma he played shortstop for semi-pro baseball team the Blanketeers of Elkin. After marriage, Bob and Erma moved to Hollis and then Ellenboro where "Mr. Bob" as he was affectionately known by his students, taught and coached baseball and basketball at Ellenboro Elementary School for many years. He was active in his church and taught Sunday School. He also active in his community particularly at the local Colfax Free Fair and in local politics. Bob died just shy of his 50th birthday after suffering a third massive heart attack, but the ideals he instilled in his students and children live on.
