Description	:	Robert Lee Gordon, Sr., son of James Amos Gordon and Emily Melinda Boyles Gordon. His wife was Gradie Alma Mabe Gordon. They married November 7, 1926. They have seven children. Robert is known by relatives and friends as "Washie Bob". He grew up in Stokes Co. on a farm which had been in the Gordon family for five generations. As a young boy Bob went with his father to Black Mtn. to get tannin bark taken from chestnut oaks. The bark was used to tan hides to make leather for rail transport. ... As a young boy Bob went with his father to Black Mtn. to get tannin bark taken from chestnut oaks. The bark was used to tan hides to make leather for rail transport. Bob attended Volunteer School which once stood near the present Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church. The school boys took turns building fires in the potbelly stove that stood in the center of the one-room school. Dad's school years were interrupted to help his family during planting and harvest seasons. He was a dedicated student and won gold medal awards in speaking. In the eighth grade he transferred to Pinnacle School. He carried his lunch in a cloth sugar sack and got his daily exercise by the five mile walk. Gradie and Bob built a home on what is now the Coon Road. They worked on the farm together and raised tobacco and most of the meats, poultry, vegetables, fruits, and grain required for themselves and their family. In 1961 Bob and Gradie moved to Pilot mtn. where he was employed by Pilot Knob Park until his retirement. Bob loved to play the banjo or fiddle.
