Read More	Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Wednesday, July 22, 2009 Robert L. James, 99, passed away Monday, July 20, 2009, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va. Robert was born in Mobjack, Va., and resided there his entire life until becoming a resident at the Gloucester House the last few years when his health began to decline. He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Jefferson and Margaret C. James; his wife, Katherine O. James; their daughter, Caroline Elizabeth; four brothers, Jefferson James Jr., William James, Woodrow James, and Andrew James; five sisters, Laura McElroy, Ruth Moore, Mary Clements, Margaret Clements, and Naomi James who died in infancy. Robert was a retired waterman and not a day passed that he didn't wish he were still out working on the waters of the Mobjack Bay. In his early years when the oyster industry was bountiful, Robert was employed by J. S. Darling Inc., as a watchman for their oyster grounds. The flexibility of this job also gave him the opportunity to harvest oysters and clams on his own, aboard Darling's old watch boat, the Jock. Throughout his career, Robert's local knowledge and expertise were sought after by many other companies, as well, to oversee the oyster harvesting processes on their grounds. When the local oyster industry declined in the late 50's and early 60's, Robert had to make changes in order to earn a living. He set up a seafood business at his dock, fished crab pots himself and purchased the catches of other waterman, which in turn were sold to retailers. When in season, he continued to catch oysters, in what would finally prove to be a futile effort. He is survived by sons, Robert L. James Jr. and his wife, June and David N. James; daughter, Mary J. Mason and her husband, Jim; brother, Frank and his wife, Elizabeth; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home in Mathews. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Providence Cemetery in Miles, Va. NOTE: His wife was Katherine OLIVER
