Read More	SGT US Army Air Forces Lynn Goddard Lynn Goddard, 75, 422 West C Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, in Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Maryville, Tenn., (Blount County), living in Carter County most of his life, he was the son of the late Homer Lee and Dorothy Welch Goddard. He was a retired coach and teacher, serving 45 years. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles E. and Harold Goddard. Mr. Goddard grew up in Elizabethton and played football and basketball for junior high in 1936 and 1937. A 1943 graduate of Elizabethton High School, he played football at the running back position for four years (1939-42). The football team was conference champions in 1941 and co-champions in 1942. He made the All-Conference team both years and also made honorable mention in All State in 1942. While in high school, he lettered in four sports, playing basketball, baseball and track, in addition to football. In 1941, the teams won the conference in all four sports. He graduated from Milligan College in 1949, where he played football three years, leading the nation in punting in 1947, and baseball two years. He then played one year semi-pro baseball for Coeburn, Va. In August 1949, he became head coach at Unaka High School. Immediately, he organized the Watauga Conference in the spring of 1949-50 and was elected as its first president. His 1949 team won the first game in the history of Unaka football. During the next 10 years, his football team won six championships and finished second four times with only one losing season. Years later, the school named the stadium in front of Unaka High School the "Goddard Field" in his honor. While at Unaka, he also coached boys basketball for seven years, coaching the girls basketball team one year. He coached the track team for three years and two of those three years the team was district runner-up. For four years, he coached the baseball team and won three Watauga championships. In 1952, Goddard received his master's degree from the University of Mississippi. After 12 years at Unaka High School, in 1961 Goddard came back to his alma mater, Elizabethton High School, and took the freshman football team. He was named head football coach and athletic director in 1965. The football program had been down for 10 years, with the exception of one winning season (7-3) in 1963. Immediately, the Cyclone team started uphill. It took three years, but in 1968 his team won victories over Johnson City, Kingsport, Oak Ridge and others. His total overall record, while at Elizabethton High, was 52-33-2. His 1969 team, with an 8-2 record, was co-champions of the conference with Morristown, who went on to win the state championship. Goddard coached tennis for 12 years at Elizabethton, starting the present tennis program, and had several players receive scholarships. He started and coached the Park and Recreation tennis program and had four players win state championships, defeating Oak Ridge, Chattanooga, Baylor, Nashville and other large cities. He was the director of Elizabethton City Park and Recreation from 1960-66. Through the years, Mr. Goddard received the following honors: organized and was the first president of the Watauga Conference; "Coach of the Year" four times in the Watauga Conference; while at Elizabethton High School, he was Conference Coach of the Year, 1968, Upper East Tennessee Coach of the Year, 1965; selected by a poll of state coaches as one of the "Top Ten Coaches" in the state of Tennessee in 1965 and honored at a special banquet in Nashville; vice president of the Big Seven Conference, 1970-71; and selected by the "Old Timers Group" at Milligan College as being the top athlete in the first 50 years of Milligan's athletics, along with Virginia native, Charles Dagata. Mr. Goddard spent 2 1/2 years in the Air Force during World War II on Tinian Island in the Pacific, serving as a B-29 radar operator and mechanic. He was a former president of the Carter County Hunting & Fishing Club and also the Elizabethton/Carter County Boys & Girls Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as superintendent and a lay leader teacher. Survivors include his wife, Patricia "Patsy" Taylor Goddard, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Mrs. Terri and Richard Parker, Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. Jennifer and Randall Birchfield, Elizabethton; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Robert Lynn "Bob" Goddard, II, Hernando, Fla.; Charles F. and Jan Goddard, Pensacola, Fla.; and Pat and Kathy Goddard, Elizabethton; two sisters: Madelyn Rasar, Elizabethton; and Mary Moore, Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren: Patricia Parker Eagel, Atlanta; Carrie Gutierrez, Atlanta, Ga.; Ashley and Alexandra Birchfield, both of Elizabethton; Charles Goddard, II, Rachel Goddard and Joel T. Goddard; all of Pensacola, Fla.; Grayson T. Goddard and Hunter Goddard, both of Elizabethton; one great-granddaughter, Candace Linkenback, Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
