When but a boy of twelve years of age, in 1856 he came with his parents to Iowa, and settled in Clay Township, Hardin County. Very early, as a mere boy he enlisted in the First Iowa Calvary. Read More	Hardin County Ledger 05/15/1919 Robert Monroe Higginbotham was born near Xenia, Green County, Ohio, February 7, 1844. Died at Eldora, Iowa, May 8, 1919. When but a boy of twelve years of age, in 1856 he came with his parents to Iowa, and settled in Clay Township, Hardin County. Very early, as a mere boy he enlisted in the First Iowa Calvary. The enlistment took place Jan. 4, 1864. He served until the end of the war, and was honorably discharged March 19, 1866. He was engaged in some of the fiercest conflicts of the closing years of the civil war. On August 18, 1866, he was united in marriage to Lydia Stewart. To this marriage were born two sons, E. D. and R. S., both of California. Mr. Higginbotham and wife settled on a farm near Mineral Point, Hardin County, Iowa, soon after the war, where they spent many happy years together. They shared one another's love and affection through fifty-three years. Two sisters grew to womanhood in the home where Robert grew to manhood, both of whom survive their brother. They are Mrs. Mary Jones of Eldora, and Mrs. Susan M. Webb of Atkinson, Minnesota. Soon after the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Higginbotham, they started the Christian life together. First they united with the United Brethren Church of Mineral Point. When the Mineral Point Church ceased to be, they united with the Congregational Church of Eldora, more than 30 years ago. Since that time they have been faithful attendants and Mr. Higginbotham has held prominent offices in the Church. Funeral services were held from the home on Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Albert R. Rice officiated assisted by Rev. William Ramsey of Ottumwa, a former pastor.
