Work Hand County lost one of her finest residents, when R.T. Sedam passed away Friday evening at his home in S. Lawrence. Mr. Sedam had been ill only a week, having suffered a paralytic stroke the Saturday before his death. He passed away at the age of 90 years. Funeral services were held Monday from the Community Church of St. Lawrence, and interment made in the G.A,R. Cemetery at Miller. Services were in charge of Rev. O'Neil, and were largely attended by the many friends of the deceased. Members of the Masonic Lodge, of which Mr. Sedam was a member, attended in a body. Six grandsons of Mr. Sedam acted a pall bearers. Services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic Lodge, and a firing squad composed of American Legion men fired their last salute to a departed comrade. Surviving his death are his widow, and eleven grown sons and daughters, R.B. Sedam, Vayland; JA. Sedam, St. Paul; E.E. Sedam, Lake City, S.D., H.B. Sedam, Huron; Mrs. J.T. McCullen, Miller; Mrs. I. D. Fancher, St. Paul; Mrs. J.B. Ross, Miller; R.T. Sedam, Medford, Ore.; J.E. Sedam, Long Beach, Calif.; and Mrs. Sid Fritts, St. Lawrence. With the exception of two, all the family were at home for the funeral. Out of town relatives who attended the services ere: Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Sedam from St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Sedam of lake City, S.D.; H. B. Sedam of Huron; C. F. Slafter, Robert Sedam, Clark Sedam of Lincoln, Nebr.; Mrs. Anna Tone; Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Carlton from Rapid City; Mrs. A.C. Ross from Deadwood; Miss Grace Buckley of Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. Art Mittlestedt of Milbank; J.T. McCullen Jr., of Huron and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Nolt of Mitchell. There is little that can be added to the many fine tributes paid to this honorable man, both in life and death. His death marks the passage of another one of Hand County's leading citizens, a soldier, a statesman and a historical character. Mr. Sedam was born in Union County, Penn., on February 5, 1839. His father died when he was but seven years old and he was apprenticed to a shoemaker at an early age. He was self-educated, having had no school advantages, yet few men had the fund of information or were better posted on current topics than he. He served his country in the great Civil struggle between north and south from 1861 to 1865, as a member of the 15th Illinois Infantry, Co. C. He was taken prisoner in October 1864, and remained in Andersonville Prison until the close of the War. On October 1st, 1865, he was married to Emeret Buckley, and pursued the occupation of farming in Ogle County, Ill., for many years. In 1882, he brought his family to St. Lawrence, where he has since resided. While a resident of Hand County he served in various local offices of his home town, and in 1893 was a member of the state legislature serving the county with great distinction. A loyal, patriotic citizen of his state and country, he maintained to the last, an active interest in public affairs. One of his greatest activities was with the organization of the Grand Army of the Republic. Two years ago he was honored by selection as Commander of the State G.A.R. and at his request, one state meeting was held at Miller. Mr. Sedam was one of the oldest Masons in the state, having united with the order at Rochelle, Ill., in 1864. He was a charter member of the local Masonic bodies and was always an outstanding and able leader in its various departments. In lodge room, at the beside of an ailing brother, and at the burial of the departed. In 1893 he was elected Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Mason of South Dakota. He was a sincere church member, and was one of the founders of the first Sunday school in hand County, serving as its superintendent for many years, and always retained a vital interest in affairs of the church. In character, he was an upright citizen, in disposition, a genial companion, a generous neighbor, admired and respected by many friends during his long residence here. The inscrutable laws of Providence brought to a close within a few months the lives of three men who settled on government land adjoining each other nearly half a century ago, and were closely associated in all the struggles of a pioneer settlement. Mr. Sedam, Charles Sheppard and John M. King settled upon tracts of land joining each other on the east side of St. Lawrence.
