Description	:	Robert W. Mullenger was the third child and son of William R. and Mary Tyler Mullenger, both natives of England in the London vicinity. Robert was born in Wisconsin and moved to Iowa when he was about 4 1/2. The family traveled down the Mississippi River to Sabula, Iowa. Then they went overland in a covered wagon to Bear Grove Township in Guthrie county where the family survived the winter there and the father walked on to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mullenger was the third child and son of William R. and Mary Tyler Mullenger, both natives of England in the London vicinity. Robert was born in Wisconsin and moved to Iowa when he was about 4 1/2. The family traveled down the Mississippi River to Sabula, Iowa. Then they went overland in a covered wagon to Bear Grove Township in Guthrie county where the family survived the winter there and the father walked on to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In March of 1864, they went west and settled in the newly established community of Exira, Iowa in Audubon County. The community only had 7 homes at that time. Robert's father established a blacksmith business in the northwest corner of town, near the curve of Highway 71, north of Exira. Robert was one of 7 children whose mother died in 1873. She was buried in the old north east section of the Exira cemetery. As was the custom in those days, the children went to live with other families who could care for them. Robert went to live with the Rudolph Kremling family and later with the H.F. Andrews family for 2 years, and then H.F. Andrews' father for 5 more years. Robert W. rented land for one year. Then in 1883, he moved from Cass County to Audubon County where he rented land. Five years later, he bought 152 acres in Section 21 of Hamlin Township. On Oct 2, 1889, Robert and Sadie Sizer were married. They made their home on a farm in Hamlin Township of Audubon County, Iowa, property that he had bought previously. A grove of cedar trees was planted in the yard in 1890, making a very attractive yard. At this place they lived all their married lives. However, on 28 Nov 1907, a fire destroyed the house. Robert @. thenbuilt a large 8 room home with furnace, bathroom, gas lights, and plumbing. Robert W. also had built several barns, graineries and cribs. He was a respected farmer. He raised registered thoroughbred Percheron horses and was a member of the Percheron Society. He also raised thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle, Duroc-Jersey hogs, and Plymouth Rock chickens. The farm was known as the "Evergreen Hill Stock Farm." Robert W. assisted in organizing the Blue Grass Creamery Company at Hamlin and held offices of secretary and director for several years. He served as school director for 4 terms and helped get the first modern school in Audubon County built. Although he claimed to be a Republican until 1912, he changed his political views to the New Progressive Party when Colonel Roosevelt organized it. He was also a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Robert W. and Sadie were the parents of 5 children: Ethel C., Mabel L., Robert T. who lived full lives, but two died in infancy, John and Bessie Mae. Robert died on his farm.
