Born Sept. 27, 1936, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Alvin Wesley and Laura Steward Thorington. On July 17, 1960, he married Coleen Brown in New London. Mr. Thorington was a welder at J.I. Case Co. in Burlington, foreman at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown and a supervisor at Chittenden–Eastman in Burlington. He was a high school graduate and attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington for two years. He was an Air Force veteran, serving as a medic for six years. He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and writing letters to The Hawk Eye. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rick Alan Thorington of Cedar Rapids and Robert William Thorington of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Debra Lund of Danville; one grandson; one stepbrother, William Carpenter of Mount Pleasant; one half sister, Mattie DeWitt of Keokuk; one half brother, Jim Carpenter of Colona, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Stace Carpenter, one sister, one half sister and one son. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel in New London. There will be no family visitation. The graveside service for Mr. Thorington will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Brooks Cemetery in New London, with Pastor Hank Ledbetter officiating. A memorial has been established for Brooks Cemetery.
