BOYD, familiarly known to his many old friends and associates as "Squire" BOYD, passed peacefully and quietly away at his home on North Second street at 10:30 o'clock, Saturday night, August 31, 1907, at the ripe old age of 84 years, 5 months, and 8 days. Robert William BOYD was born at Washington, Pennsylvania, on March 23, 1833 (? 1823). He came to Iowa in 1839 with his parents and to Eddyville in 1848, and had since resided here, so he was one of the oldest residents of the town. When a young man he learned the cabinet makers and carpenters trade, which he followed for anumber of years until 1865, when he took up the study of law, and was admitted to practice in 1868, and followed that profession until his health failed about ten years ago. He was first married to Miss Lucinda POWERS in Eddyville on August 8, 1850, and to this union two children were born, Carrie A., now Mrs. H. E. GOODALL, of Ogalalla, Nebraska, and Harry E. of Malcom, Iowa. His first wife died at Eddyville on March 23, 1877, and on May 6, 1878, he was married to Margaret A. MORRELL at Elmira, New York. His devoted wife, his two children, and four grandchildren survive him. He was the last member of his family, his brothers and sisters all preceding him in death. Mr. BOYD joined Day Lodge No. 26, I. O. O. F., in Eddyville in 1852. He was a member of Eddyville Lodge No. 74, A. F. & A. M., on November 16, 1869 and was a faithful member in both lodges till the time of his death, and it was his wish that his funeral services be conducted by the Masonic order. He practiced what he preached, namely, a fair, honorable, upright life filled with good deeds towards his fellowmen, rather thana life of religious faith. His health had been failing since January, 1898, and more rapidly the past year. His last illness was of a little less than two weeks' duration. The funeral services were held from the residence at two o'clock Monday afternoon. The Hon. Wm. McNETT, of Ottumwa, an old time friend of Mr. BOYD, made a brief address. A quartette sang his favorite song, "When the Mists Have Rolled Away." The complete Masonic burial service was used and his wishes in regard to his funeral were carried out as nearly as possible. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. At the conclusion of the services at the residence the remains were conveyed to Highland cemetery where they were laid to rest by the side of his first wife. The pall bearers were: Peter FRANCIS, John JAGER, Sr., Gervais FAIS, H. G. TRUE, Jesse PALMER, and E. M. EAUSNAUGH. During the 59 years which Mr. BOYD had resided here he had won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact, and we join with the friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
