He died Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of seventy-seven. Robert was born in Schleswig, Iowa, and received his education in a rural school in Ida County. After completing his education, Robert worked on the family farm and various occupations until 1951. On July 22, 1951, Robert was united in marriage to Irene Geise at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig. The couple made their home in Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of one son. Robert worked as a meat cutter from 1951 until he retired in 1988. Robert was a devoted and faithful member of the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, where he served on the counsel for eight years. He was a member of the Schleswig Business Club and Community Club. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who worked hard to provide for his family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, helping people in need and gardening. In his free time, Robert enjoyed fishing and baseball. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Cassens and Jute Bumann. Survivors include his wife, Irene of Schleswig; one son, Dennis Bumann and his wife, Saundra of Schleswig; three grandchildren, Allison Behrendsen and her husband, Dustin of Youngstown, Ohio, Carrie Bumann of Schleswig, and Greg Bumann and his wife, Jessica of Fort Polk, Louisiana; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Dustin and Austin Behrendsen; six sisters, Katherine Schwartz of Marshall, Michigan, Lillian Reese of Schleswig, Margaret Hess, Minne Hess, both of Marshall, Michigan, Hattie Susie of Cushing, Marie Schwanz of Schleswig; four brothers, George Cassens of Battle Creek, Michigan, Henry Cassens of Marshall, Michigan, LeRoy Bumann and his wife, Lori of Schleswig and Albert Bumann and his wife, Helen of Sturgis, Michigan; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2001, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Douglas Searles officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Rubie Kastner singing, "Nearer, My God, To Thee" and "Beyond the Sunset" and congregational hymn, "How Great Thou Art". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Jessica Bumann, Carrie Bumann, Allison and Dustin Behrendsen. Pallbearers were Greg Bumann, Richard Geise, Vernon Lutz, John Cassens, Dale Reese and Scott Noll. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.
