Martin Center from complications of a hemorrhagic stroke suffered on February 11, 2011. He was born on August 28, 1939, in Waterloo, son of Robert and Verona (Poock) Hennings and baptized on September 17, 1939, at First Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was confirmed on April 11, 1954, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver. On November 6, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart Mildred "Millie" Buss at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Denver. Rod graduated from Denver High School in 1957 and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. During this time he worked part-time at A&P and Eagles Food Stores. On January 28, 1959, he became employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works as a mail clerk and shortly thereafter he became a general supervisor in Department 6C, a position he held for 34 years, retiring on April 30, 1993. He was a faithful member of St. Paul United Church of Christ serving on church council and as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. Rod also was a dedicated member of the Denver Lions Club and was awarded the Warren Coleman Award for his dedication and service in Lionism. After moving to Denver, Rod dedicated many hours on the Denver Senior Housing Board. During this time he also worked part-time at The Amish Connection. Rod was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a great role model for all of us, teaching faith in God and love of family. Some of Rod's greatest enjoyments were spending time with family and friends, farming, traveling, snowmobiling and attending tractor pulls. The grandchildren remember many hours spent with him on their bike rides and playing the "paper" game. Survived by his wife, Millie, one son Kent (Jeanne) Hennings of Cedar Falls, two daughters Lori (James) Lown of Denver and Deanne "Dee" (Fredy) Bolhuis of Cedar Falls, six grandchildren, Jonathan Hennings of Minneapolis, MN, Kaitlyn Hennings of Ames, Carolyn, Chelsea and Courtney Bolhuis of Cedar Falls and Megan Lown of Denver. Also survived by two brothers Donald (Barbara) Hennings of Frisco, TX, Allen Hennings of Waterloo, one sister Coleen (Ken) Boyce of Waterloo and one sister- in- law Lois Buss of Denver. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Patricia Hennings and brother-in-law John Buss. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 7, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 300 Washington Street, Denver, Iowa. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Denver. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at St. Paul United Church of Christ, on Monday, April 6, in Denver and for an hour before services at the church.
