Roger was born on June 11, 1945, in Goessel to Peter N. and Louise (Wiederstein) Funk. He was raised in the Potwin area until the age of 12 and then completed his education in Newton. Roger served in the 137th Infantry of the National Guard with the 9th Division in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. He was a member of the VFW. On Oct. 14, 1978, he married Sherri Lawrence in Newton. She survives of the home. He was employed by Farmers Grain Coop as the feed mill manager from 1965 until his retirement in 2002. From 2002, he worked at Newton Medical Center in the maintenance department until 2009. He attended Newton Christian Church and was a former foster parent for United Methodist Youthville. Roger was an avid collector of almost anything. He especially enjoyed collecting coins, toys, NASCAR items and baseball cards. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and watching NASCAR races. When his health was better, he enjoyed vacationing in Branson with his wife, Sherri. His grandchildren were the delight of his life, and he loved spending time with them. Although some of his children were by birth, some by marriage and some by choice, they all held a special place in his heart. Survivors include children, Stacy and David Thomas of Newton, Heather Funk of Lincoln, Neb., Carey and James Johnson of Newton, Amy and Stan Kolb of Lincoln, and Roger Jr. and Kim Funk of Waverly, Neb.; grandchildren, Lexis and Vanessa Funk of Lincoln, Alexis, Aspen and Tanner Thomas of NewPort News, Va., Treasure, Tenaja and Buddy Johnson of Newton, Courtney and Allyssa Kolb of Lincoln, and Elizabeth and F. Wyatt Funk of Waverly; and siblings, Peter L. and Linda Funk of rural Halstead, Delora Funk of North Newton, Terry Funk of Newton, and Carol and Larry Schmidt of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, George W. Funk. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family present to greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Newton Christian Church. Memorials have been set up for the Newton Christian Church Youth Program, Newton Christian Church's Haiti Mission Program, and the Harvey County Sheriff's Department Equipment Fund.
