Roger Lee Luthy, the son of Donald H. and Gladys (Vetter) Luthy, was born Feb. 8, 1937, at Hastings and passed away in Aurora on April 11, 2014, at the age of 77. Roger grew up on the family farm located east of Giltner until moving to northeast of Aurora. Finally, in 1949, he moved to the farm north of Murphy. While growing up he was active in 4-H and sports while in high school. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1955. Following graduation he went to work for Condon Irrigation and then the Aurora Co-op at the Murphy Elevator until he went into the U.S. Army on Sept. 6, 1960, where he served until Sept. 7, 1962. While in the service Roger served as a military policeman. After his discharge, Roger returned home to Aurora, where he worked for Davis OK Tire until purchasing his own business of hauling milk cans for the Farmers Union Creamery in Aurora. Roger was united in marriage to Berniece Rauert on April 5, 1964, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm west of Aurora before moving into Aurora in 1967. Roger continued to haul milk but switched to hauling bulk milk when he went into business with Dennie Nielsen. At one time they had a fleet of eight trucks hauling milk. When the creamery in Aurora closed, they then hauled to Fullerton and finally Superior. In 1976, they moved to the family farm where he was raised. In 1977, he sold the milk hauling business and went into farming. During this time, Roger also started driving a school bus for the Aurora 4-R Schools, which he continued to do even after he retired from farming. He drove the bus 36 years until retiring due to health issues. He always had time for his children's activities when they were involved in 4-H, scouts, band and other school activities, for which he drove the bus a lot of times. Roger was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Aurora Lions Club, Murphy Elevator coffee group, past member of the Phillips Lions Club, Platt-Duetsche Society, and the Saddle Club in Grand Island, and American Legion Post No. 42 in Aurora. He enjoyed his family and grandsons very much. Roger loved spending time with them on the farm, driving tractors and four wheelers, and attending their school activities, sports and music activities. He enjoyed all the plays and singing performances that his son-in-law Bill participated in. He also enjoyed playing cards in a card club for 50 years, camping and traveling with friends was a big highlight after retiring. Roger enjoyed serving as a host in the Ag Building for the Plainsman Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Berniece of Phillips; a son, Randall of Aurora; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Douglas Bithell of Omaha and Ranelle and William Maltas of Lincoln; four grandsons, Jared and Derek Bithell of Omaha, and Ian and Zane Maltas of Lincoln; a sister, Annette Wilson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Debbie Luthy of Stockton, Calif.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Glenn and Suzanne Rauert of Aurora; five nieces and nephews; and an uncle, Donald Vetter of Marquette. During his fight with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), Roger received numerous units of blood. Please save a life and donate to the American Red Cross.
