Geuder completed a six year enlistment in the Navy last fall but when war broke out he enlisted again, leaving on Christmas Day. He was assigned to the Naval Air arm as a radio man and had been stationed at Seattle. Two weeks ago he wrote his parents stating that he was being transferred but could not say to what point. +++ Guttenberg Press, IA, Thursday, August 13, 1942, pg. 1, cols. 5-6 Roland Geuder, Local Boy DIED AT DUTCH HARBOR Indicated New Information That Roland Geuder, popular Guttenberg young man, met his death in the Japanese attack on Dutch Harbor, Alaska, seems certain. The fact has been revealed in communications to Mrs. Ernest Geuder from Naval officers and friends of her son, who was in the Naval Air Corps. During June, Mrs. Geuder received word of the death of Roland in action but the communication, due to war censorship, could not state the place. Immediately after receiving the word, Mrs. Geuder took steps to secure more complete information and this effort resulted in letters from a Navy officer and the chief radio man under whom her son worked in the Aircraft Scouting Force. The first of the letters came from E. J. Post, chief radio man of Patrol Wing 4, Seattle, Washington. This letter follows: "My dear Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Geuder, I received your letter addressed to "the chief radioman". You contacted the person you desired, and I am more than glad to give you any information I can, also to do anything I possibly can for such a good friend of mine as your son was. "I was not in the same place as your son was at the time, but he was on his way here to give us a hand, but I heard he was strafed on the morning of June 3 (no doubt you have heard of that raid in the paper by now. Censorship does not permit me to name the place.) "The whole radio gang was deeply shocked when we received the news, and we will do our part to see that Roland's sacrifice is avenged. "About his personal belongings. I have checked and he has his uniforms, some books, pictures and a postal savings account. Those are being sent to you via the first available transportation. "If there is anything missing please notify me and I will do all I can to locate it. "I would like to add that we had already started procedure to make Roland a chief radioman on August 1. He was well liked by everyone in his outfit and did his work very well. "The whole gang sympathizes with you in your loss. Respectfully E. J. Rost" The second letter was the United States Pacific Fleet, Aircraft Scouting Force, and follows: "Dear Mrs. Geuder, "I have just received your letter requesting information concerning your son, Roland. At the time of his death he was on duty as a radio man in the communication division of Patrol Wing Four. He was in a combat area at the time and was killed in action with the enemy. "All of us knew Roland well and realize what a loss this is, not only to us, but to the country as well. Please accept our sincerest sympathy. Yours truly, Ralph R. Humes Lieutenant, U.S. Navy Personnel Officer Patrol Wing Four" +++ Guttenberg Press, IA, Thursday, October 29, 1942, pg. 1, col. 1 MEMORIAL FOR WAR CASUALTY Services Will Be Held Sunday for Roland Geuder Memorial services will be held for Roland Geuder, son or Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Geuder, at St. ____ Lutheran church this Sunday at 8 p.m. The services will be conducted by Rev. H. C. Coo____. Geuder, a graduate of Guttenberg high school and well known _____ lost his life on June 3 in the Japanese attack on Dutch Harbor, Alaska. He was on duty with air patrol wing 4 at the time of his death. Although the Geuders learned of his death shortly after it occurred, they were unable to secure information until about two months later when they received communications from friend of their son and also from the Navy department.
