Description	:	Roland “Rollie” J. Winter, 65, of Shell Rock, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly. Rollie was born on August 4, 1953 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Virginia (Waterman) and Theodore Winter. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1971. Winter, 65, of Shell Rock, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly. Rollie was born on August 4, 1953 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Virginia (Waterman) and Theodore Winter. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1971. On September 25, 1999, Rollie was united in marriage to Delia “Dee” Manross in Shell Rock, Iowa. Rollie worked for Henke Manufacturing from 1970 until 1972, when he went to work in the maintenance department at John Deere Waterloo Works. While at John Deere, Rollie helped implement the inhouse machine training program, and served as committeeman and steward for the UAW. He retired from John Deere in 2002 but continued working at Hawkeye Community College as a CNC programming instructor until 2014. Roland was multitalented and had many different interests. He loved playing the stock market and was a certified scuba diver. He raised race horses and provided horses for the chuck wagon races. He was a golden glove boxer and coached and served as treasurer for Cedar Valley Boxing. He also enjoyed bowling and was a competition pin shooter. Roland is survived by his wife, Dee; his daughter, Darcy (Matt) Ballard of Blockton, Iowa; his son, DJ Gaede of Shell Rock, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Candy) Winter of Shell Rock, Iowa, and Roger (Julie) Winter of El Paso, TX; one sister, Carol (Mike) Hamilton of Oelwein, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ralph in 1974. According to his wishes, Roland’s body has been cremated. There will be a celebration honoring Roland’s life from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, on Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Boyd Building in Shell Rock. Following the celebration gathering, at 3:00 pm, Roland’s cremains will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Memorials may be directed to Shell Rock First Responders or the Shell Rock Library Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock is assisting the family.
