PAUL — Roland O. Dobson, 97, of St. Paul, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at St. Paul. Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of the arrangements. Roland Omar Dobson, was born July 6, 1918, on a farm northwest of Cedar Rapids to William H. and Linda (Hoefer) Dobson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, attended rural country school in Boone County and graduated from Primrose High School in 1935. Rollie entered the Army Air Corps in 1940, serving in the South Pacific until being honorably discharged in 1945 and returning home to farm. On Feb. 2, 1949, Rollie was united in marriage to Darlene J. Andersen at the church parsonage in St. Edward. They lived on the family farm where he grew up and that his grandfather homesteaded. In 1978, they retired from farming, moving into Cedar Rapids. Rollie served eight years as a Boone County commissioner from 1979 to 1987. In 2013, they moved to St. Paul where they resided at Matelyn Retirement Community. He was a member of the VFW and the Dan Cox American Legion Post No. 44 in Cedar Rapids. One of his most memorable experiences was taking the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with his brother, Reggie, and granddaughter, Angela, in 2009. His love and passion was farming and his family. He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters and two sons-in-law, Laura Martinsen of St. Paul, Ann Martinsen and Donald Langer of Spalding, and Kerry Dobson and Bruce Reneaud of Omaha; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlene in March 2015; two brothers, Reggie Dobson and Seth Dobson; and one sister, Lillian Whitten.
