Read More	Death of Rolla Ballard It is our sad duty this week to chronicle the death and burial of one of Marquette's most popular and esteemed young men, Rolla Ballard, which occurred at Aurora last Thursday. A young man of a quiet, retiring disposition, who numbered his friends by the score, such was his peaceful character as to incur the enmity of no one. It was a shock to the community that could hardly be realized when the news came of his unexpected and sudden demise, as the result of an operation on his injured leg. During the encampment of the Nebraska National Guard at Pole Mountain, Wyo., this summer, Rolla received an injury which continued to bother him after his return to such an extent as to necessitate his leaving work at the barber shop and going to Aurora, where he stopped at the home of his sister and received medical treatment. On last Thursday, by consultation of the attending physicians, an operation was deemed necessary, and while it was feared that it might be necessary to remove the leg, yet none of the relatives or friends were prepared for the news, when the announcement came, that owing to his weakened constitution the patient was unable to withstand the shock of the operation. During his prolonged illness Rolla was a cheerful patient and had no realization that his condition was so critical, but his constitution was so undermined and the decay of the bone was so far-reaching in the system, that he never regained conciousness and died shortly afterward. The remains were brought to Marquette on the afternoon train Saturday and the funeral party was met at the depot by a large number of the friends of the family. The casket was tenderly borne to the family residence and both the bereaved and the departed one received the tender care of loving friends and neighbors. The funeral services were held from the house at 10 o'clock Sunday morning and the remains were followed to the United Brethern church by a large delegation of the A O U W lodge of which the deceased was a member. The six pallbearers, John Dorsey, Roy Powers, Dalton McCarthy, Norval Graham, Roy May and William Siever, were all members of the order as well as the particular friends of the deceased. A squad of company H, N N G, wer in line at the church. The casket and pulpit platform were literally covered with the many and most beautiful floral offerings, prominent among them being a large representation of "The Gates Ajar," which, together with another representation of "The Cross and Crown" were a silent tribute of Rolla's many friends in the community, the same being purchased by popular subscription. There were many other floral offerings by the A O U W lodge, the ladies of the U B church and individual friends. The services were in charge of Rev H A Strohl, pastor of the U B church. His sermon was a message of comfort and consolation to the bereaved ones and the text was taken from 1st Samuel, 20:3: "Truly, as the Lord liveth and my soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death." The music was furnished by the choir of the church, who very beautifully and impressively sang the songs appropriate to the occasion. Rolla Calvert Ballard was born in Hamilton county, Nebraska, October 24, 1890, and died at the home of his sister in Aurora, October 10, 1912, aged 21 years, 11 months and 16 days. He was the son of Mr and Mrs James W Ballard, his father dying when the son was but 3 weeks old. While yet a small boy his mother was married to James Nickels, who was a true and loving father to the boy as well as to the other children who remained at home. Mr Nickels feels the loss as deeply as though he was losing a son of his own blood, but takes comfort in the thought that he has never considered him other than his own son and never failed to give him a true father's care. Rolla was engaged to be married to Miss Cora Geitsinger of Central City, and this is one of the saddest features of the bereavement. The hearts of the community, while strangers to her, go out in sympathy to this young lady who was robbed by death of her chosen companion for life. Rolla enlisted some few months ago in company H N N G, under the command of Captain Cole, and was an honored member of the company at the time of his death. He was also a member of the A O U W lodge. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Richland cemetery and were followed to the grave by one of the largest concourses of friends that ever attended a funeral at this place. The deceased leaves to mourn his departure a heart-broken mother, a sorrowing step-father and six sisters, Mrs I H Husten of Ravenna, Mrs George Cambell and Mrs L L Campbell of Aurora, Mrs A E Huering and Mrs James Boyd of Central City and Mrs C A Stalnaker of Marquette. Together with a host of friends we add our words of condolence to these bereaved ones. Card of Thanks We desire to take this means of expressing our heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and neighbors for their kindly assistance and sympathy extended during the sickness, death and burial of our loved one. We also wish to extend our thanks to the members of the A O U W lodge, to the comrades of the N N G, the donors of all the beautiful flowers and to the choir for the music furnished at the services. Republican-Register, Aurora, NE October 17, 1912 The people of Marquette and vicinity were saddened last Thursday when the news reached us of the death of Rolla Ballard, who passed away at the home of his sister in Aurora. Rolla had been suffering for several weeks with a bruised limb while on encampment with Company H of Aurora at Pole Mountain, Wyo. The limb was amputated, but the great shock was more than he could endure after having suffered so long. We were not able to obtain particulars in time, so obituary will appear next week.
