The fears of members of the family for the worst were realized yesterday morning when the word came from Los Angeles that Rollin E. Hattery had passed away from the effects of the serious operation that he had undergone Monday morning for appendicitis's and gravel. His age was nearly 24 years. The young man was taken ill but a little more than a week ago, and as soon as it was ascertained the seriousness of his condition required immediate action, he was removed to a Los Angeles hospital where the operation was performed Monday. At first he seemed to rally from the ordeal as well as could be expected, and hopes were entertained that he could recover. However, later his condition began to grown more serious and he gradually sank to his death, everything being done that medical skill could suggest, but all to no result. The deceased was a son of Captain and Mrs. J. L. Hattery, 575 D street, and was highly esteemed in a large circle of friends. Besides the parents he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Etta Melton and Miss Bessie Hattery, principal of the Ninth street school and a brother, Lewis O. Hattery, of East Highlands. The family, which is one of the best known in San Bernardino, has the sympathy of a very large circle of friends. The remains will be brought to this city and funeral services will be held today at 3 o'clock from the chapel of Aldridge, Stephens & Dean, Rev. Mark B. Shaw of the First Baptist Church, and Rev. E. H, Price, of the First Congregational church, officiating. Music will be rendered by the Baptist quartet. San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 10, Col. 6 Fri., May 3, 1907 HATTERY OBSEQUIES The Boys in Blue yesterday afternoon tenderly and with loving hands laid to rest what was mortal of the late Rollin E. Hattery, their comrade, interment being at the City cemetery, and mingled their tears for their comrade, with those of the aged parents of the deceased, Captain and Mrs. J. L. Hattery, the brother and sisters and scores of other friends of the deceased. The funeral service was held from the chapel of Aldridge, Stephens & Dean which was filled to overflowing with the sympathizing friends. The casket was draped with the flag which he loved, the stars and stripes. On every hand were beautiful flowers from scores of friends in this city, Redlands and East Highlands. There were special designs from Company G, N. G. C. (National Guard), the W. C. T. U. (Women's Christian Temperance Union)and W. R. C. (Women's relief Corps), in sympathy for the members of the family who are members of the two latter organizations. The deceased was a member of Company G., N. G. C., in Redlands and had been for some time, he having resided in East Highlands at his father's ranch for some years which brought him closer to that city. He was highly esteemed by his comrades in Company G as was evidenced by 30 of the Boys in Blue, with Captain E. J. Underwood, coming over from Redlands to attend the service. A squad from the company acted as pall bearers. The service at the chapel was conducted by Rev. M. B. Shaw of the First Baptist church, and Rev. C. H. Price of the First Congregational church. A choir composed of Miss Mae Link, Miss Lake, E. S. Williams and M. B. Shaw sang "Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee." At the grave a salute was fired by a squad from Company G, "taps" were sounded by the bugler of the company, and the remains were silently lowered to the last resting place.
