Schmer was born May 28, 1943, to Jarold and Lorene (Baumann) Schmer in Hastings. He received his education in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1961. After high school, he began farming in the Sutton area. He enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard on June 4, 1964 and served until he was honorably discharged on June 3, 1970. On March 23, 1973, he married Gertrude Ehly in Sutton, and to this union two children were born. He was a lifelong member of the Federated Church and a member of the Sutton American Legion Argonne Post #61. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He is survived by his wife, Gertie Schmer of Sutton; son, Michael Schmer of Sutton; daughter and son-in-law Laura and Randy Weaver of Geneva; mother, Lorene Schmer of Sutton; granddaughter, McKenna Schmer of Grafton; step-grandchildren, Shelby and Colton Weaver of Geneva and mother-in-law Louise Ehly of Sutton He was preceded in death by his father and one brother Steve Schmer.
