Description	:	Ronald W. Austin, 84, of Salina, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. He was born Oct. 2, 1934, on the Blue Hill Ranch at Waldo to William M. and Winifred (Elder) Austin. He graduated from Waldo High School in 1952. He continued to help his father farm the Blue Hill Ranch until the age of 26. He then entered the Army and served in the Second Armored Division. Austin, 84, of Salina, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. He was born Oct. 2, 1934, on the Blue Hill Ranch at Waldo to William M. and Winifred (Elder) Austin. He graduated from Waldo High School in 1952. He continued to help his father farm the Blue Hill Ranch until the age of 26. He then entered the Army and served in the Second Armored Division. He played starting point guard for the divisional basketball team and served in Germany during the Berlin crisis. He returned from Germany in 1962 and married Linda (DeWald), on Nov. 17, 1962. They lived in Waldo and he farmed and operated the local Texaco station. He then took a job for the park service in Rocky Mountain National Park as a heavy-equipment operator and moved his family to Grand Lake, Colo. Shortly after his father’s death in 1967 they returned to Kansas and he went to work in Salina for the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked as a clerk until he retired with over 40 years of civil service. His wife, Linda, passed away in October 1984. In 1995 he married, Sylvia Petersen, they enjoyed many years of traveling together until her death in 2009. Survivors include: children, Kelly Austin (Debbie), Kris Rogers (Kevin), and Bill Austin (Amanda); grandchildren, Zach Austin, Josh Austin, Abby Austin, Jake Rogers and Kaleb Rogers; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives; sisters, Vaneta and Marilee; and grandson, Willie Giersch. Memorial service will be at1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at First Church of the Nazarene, Salina. Cremation was chosen, anda private family inurnment will be at a later date at Grand Center Cemetery, Waldo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Waldo Senior Center, in care of Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
