Martensen, 57, of Wyoming died on Monday morning, October 21, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City, following a sudden illness. Ronnie was born on April 17,1945, the son of Raymond and Florence Dirks Martensen. He received his education in the Wyoming schools and graduated from the Midland High School in the class of 1963. On September 24, 1963 he entered the United States Army and worked as a radio mechanic, serving in Nuremberg, Germany. After his return home, he reenlisted and worked on the East Coast States working as a currier for the Army. He was honorably discharged in August of 1969. After his discharge, he began working for a short time at the United Parcel Service, and then began working as a clerk for the United States Post Office, in Monticello. After working at the post office for 27 years, he retired as postmaster of the Wyoming Post Office in October of 1992. On. April 29, 1967 he married Joan Jansen, and they later divorced. He was currently working as the head groundskeeper at the Little Bear Country Club,at Wyoming. Ronnie was a member of the Zion American Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion Wyoming Post 259, both of Wyoming. Ronnie is survived by one son, Jason Martensen and wife, Pamela; one granddaughter, Alaina; one grandson, Avery, all of Lost Nation; his mother, Florence Baldwin, of Wyoming; several brothers, sisters, stepsisters, stepbrother, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Raymond, and his stepfather, Leeon Baldwin. During Ronnie's lifetime, he was an avid sports fan, ranging from his high school days, as the first quarterback on the Wyoming High school football team and playing baseball in the early 1960's, to playing on the Wyoming town team; playing baseball with his son Jason, and most recently, helping-to coach Alaina, his granddaughter's TBall Team for the last two years. He also enjoyed the antics of his grandson, Avery. Over the years in all the sports Ronnie participated in, he was known as "Rabbit," and will be missed by his family. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 Thursday morning, October 24, at the Zion American Lutheran Church at Wyoming with the Rev. Timothy Miller officiating. Burial was in the Wyoming Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wyoming Post #259, of Wyoming. Casket bearers were Sheldon Hunter, Craig Dirks,Lawrence Willey, William Rich, Gary Current, and Steve Dirks. Honorary casket bearers were Clifford Dirks, Lyle Ahrendsen and Edward Straka. The Hayden Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
