Rosalia “Sally” de Leon Aquinaldo was born June 26, 1926 in Pilar, Bataan, The Philippines. She was the seventh child of Governor and Mrs. Manuel Aquinaldo. She survived the Japanese occupation during World War II, and received her education in Manila. While singing with a band in Okinawa, Sally met and in 1951 was married to Army Lt. Hugh Duncan. She was proud to become a U.S. citizen and to move stateside. After just three years, Lt. Duncan was tragically killed in an automobile accident a month before the birth of their second son. The three moved to Seiling, Okla. to be near Lt. Duncan’s family.During this time Sally became an active member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and in 1968 was introduced by her pastor to her second husband, The Reverend Ralph Dyer of Nebraska City, Neb. The couple not only shared a marriage, but also a birthday. In 1972 they moved to Alliance to accept a call to ministry at First Christian Church. In addition to her work in the congregation, Sally taught English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and organized the community Ecumenical Choir. She was also a leader in the regional and national bodies of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), including service on the denomination General Board from 1975-79. Her service to Christ and community extended to statewide offices in Church Women United and the Nebraska Literary Council.From 1981 to 1989, Sally assisted Ralph in chaplaincy and administration of the Good Samaritan Home in Alliance. In the following decade, the couple traveled as Ralph served interim pastorates at churches in Hemingford, Bingham, Ashby and Hyannis. When his health declined, she became his steadfast caregiver until his death in 2001. Moving to Scottsbluff for her final years, Sally continued to be active in the local church and community. She kept teaching ESL and served the church as an Elder and leader of the Women’s Fellowship. Even arthritis in her hands did not stop her from the ministry of writing cards and notes to the ill, the bereaved, and those serving overseas in the military. She also sang in the choir and enjoyed reading scripture in worship. Preceding her in death are her parents, both husbands, two brothers and three sisters.
