The Humboldt Independent Humboldt, Iowa Tuesday, December 8, 1942 Page 1, Column 5 __________ Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church for Mrs. Rosa Gillespie, 89, who died the previous Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Packard. Rev. E. D. Hart preached the sermon. Several hymns were sung by a ladies quartet composed of Mesdames L. W. Miller, Harl Gimer, Wm. Blesie and Wilbur Higgens, accompanied by Mrs. Clarence Johnson at the piano. Burial was made in Elmwood cemetery east of Renwick. Pall bearers were Virgil Erwin, Clarence Erwin, Ray Thrift, Lyle Packard, Carroll Packard and Keith McCurry. Rosa Ann Evans was born October 14, 1853, to Charles and Mary Evans near Rockford, Ill., and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Packard, December 1, 1942, at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 17 days. She was the oldest of a family of ten children. When she was eight years of age she came with her parents to Iowa. The trip was made in a covered wagon drawn by a yoke of oxen. They made their home at Spirit Lake and while there she became a member of the Methodist church. On November 1, 1870, she was united in marriage to James A. Gillespie of Renwick. They were blessed with four children, two having preceded her in death. They lived in Iowa a number of years and then moved to Minnesota where her husband passed away in 1926. After her husband’s death she returned to Iowa and has made her home with her daughter ever since. Her health failed about six years ago but she was able to be up and around most of the time until three weeks ago when she became suddenly ill and gradually grew weaker until her death. Among those who mourn her departure are: One son W. H. Gillespie of Onamia, Minn., and one daughter, Pearl Packard of Renwick; three brothers, Emerson Evans and Grant Evans of Aurora, Neb., and Lincoln A. Evans of Stockholm, Neb., and two sisters, Mrs. Lettie Proud of Anaheim, Calif., and Mrs. Myra Bigger of Fillmore, Calif. One brother and three sisters preceded her in death.
