Rosena Nitschke, daughter of Gottlieb C. and Katherina (Heyd) Nitschke was born Nov. 21, 1913, eight miles northeast of Ashley, N.D., on the family homestead. She lived on her parent's farm and attended country school. She was united in marriage to Philip Eszlinger on Sept. 8, 1940, in Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. They bought a farm seven miles northeast of Ashley, where they raised small grains, beef cows and milked cows. She raised her chickens and gardened. Their son, Delbert, was born Oct. 18, 1945. They then had a helper on the farm. They farmed until her husband's death on Sept. 23, 1980. In September 1986, she moved to the Ashley Harmony Homes and on January 21, 2005, she entered the Ashley Nursing Home due to failing health. Rosena loved all activities at the nursing home, especially embroidering dishtowels and table runners. On the farm, she loved the goats and this past Easter was able to spend it with her family and hold a baby goat. Parades were always very exciting for her and she enjoyed watching the people ride the horses. But above all, Rosena's pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wendy and Reed Eszlinger, Devin, Payton and Andrew Schaan and Koby and Brynn Dobler. Survivors include one son, Delbert (Donna) Eszlinger of Ashley; three brothers, Richard Nitschke, Roland (Goldie) Nitschke and Rudolph (Emilie) Nitschke, all of Ashley; two sisters, Bertha Eszlinger of Ashley and Elsie Hoffman of Wetonka, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Esther Eszlinger of Ashley; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband and three brothers preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Rod and Lisa Eszlinger, Darcy and Vince Schaan and Garland and Ward Dobler. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley have been entrusted with the arrangements. Published in the Aberdeen News on 6/19/2006.
