Description	:	Little Rossa Absher was the first born daughter of Lewis McDaniel "Dan" & Martha Ellen Billings Absher. She died at around the age of 5 in June of 1886. Although there are no records to verify that her parents were Dan & Martha Billings Absher. Read More	Little Rossa Absher was the first born daughter of Lewis McDaniel "Dan" & Martha Ellen Billings Absher. She died at around the age of 5 in June of 1886. Although there are no records to verify that her parents were Dan & Martha Billings Absher. Verification comes from my grandfather Raymond Council Absher (Debbie Absher daug of Jimmie Ray Absher son of Raymond Council Absher son of Dan & Martha Billings Absher) that Rossa was his sister. Her death came some years before my grandfather was born. My grandfather Raymond or "Ramie" as he was known; would sometimes talk about his sister "Rossa" and how his parents Dan & Martha explained to him about what had happened to her. The story that was told to him was that little Rossa had drank bad water and had became sick, dying sometime in the proceeding days. People back then called what Rossa had as "Bloody Flux". Bloody Flux was bloody diarrhea; that came from drinking contaminated water. Doctors were few and far between. In the late 1800's you may have found the doctor available in town and with any luck he could treat your ailment. The closest town was Wilkesboro. A trip from where the Absher family lived would have taken today 35 or so minutes by car to reach. By horse & wagon; it would have been a full days journey; per my grandmother "Nora Isadoe Felts Absher"; who made these trips to town by horse & wagon in the early 1900's. Nora or "Norie" as she was known said to me her grand daughter that "they would start out in the early morning for town to get supplies; it would take till very late in the day to reach town." They would then set up camp outside of town for the night; go into town the next morning and get the supplies they had come for and hopefully return back home before dark." There were limited treatments for Bloody Flux in the 1800's even if Rossa had seen a doctor it may not have been effective since the main ingredient in the cure was "Mercury". Families used home remedies to treat their ailing family members; the remedies they tried probably had little effect on parasites & bacteria from the contaminated water. "Per my father "Jimmy Ray Absher" The water had become contaminated by the practice of livestock free roaming, and grazing on the hills above the springs; the main water source of the families affected by the "bloody flux". Both children and adults had become sickened by the water, "many" like Rossa died. The most vulnerable individuals were susceptible to the contaminated water; "the weak, "the old" and the "young". "Per my grandfather, Raymond Council Absher, "Ramie", "You will not see very old stands of trees in this area; all of the trees were cut down except for the rockiest areas where you would not be able to farm." "All of the land that could be farmed was." "Livestock was not pinned up and were allowed to roam and graze at will." "If you had a garden you put a fence around it to keep the livestock from eating it." According to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service: "North Carolina was also a fencing-out state in the 1800s, but the law changed around the turn of the twentieth century due to population growth and the expansion and increased importance of crop production." (Fencing Out meaning) You fenced out the life stock. (Dictionary) To separate or keep out by means of a fence or other barrier: How do you fence out a water source for an entire community? It would not be possible. All of the streams ran from different directions and would carry the contaminated water to adjoining streams. The contamination came from multiple sources, where ever the livestock grazed above a water source. Dan Absher or a close family member carved from local stone Rossa's marker in the shape of a head. This was a loving tribute done with their own hands; for "Dan & Martha Billings Absher's" little daughter "Rossa".
