[UPI] -- Roswell Garst, the outspoken Iowa farmer who played host to Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev on his Coen Rapids farm, died Saturday of a heart ailment in a Carroll hospital. He was 79. Garst, who farmed near Coon Rapids all but four years of his life, entertained the Russian leader during Khrushchev's tour of the United States in September, 1950. Garst visited the Soviet Union several times and corresponded with Khrushchev. Garst, who was hospitalized 11 days ago after of heart attack, helped start the Garst and Thomas Hybrid Seed Corn Co. He was a hard-headed businessman with a basic belief in providing more food for more of the world. While visiting the large Garst farming operation, Khrushchev picked up two ears of corn, inspected them closely, and then waved them in the air. "WONDERFUL CORN, wonderful corn," the premier said. "But ours is better." Khrushchev repeated his oft-expressed wish that his visit to America would help bring peace and friendship to the world. Many observers credited the visit with helping to thaw the stormy relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union the prevailed during the Cold War. Garst, a pioneer in corn-growing and cattle-feeding techniques, had been Khrushchev's guest the previous March at the Kermlin in Moscow. Garst and his wife, Elizabeth, dined with Khrushchev, and it was then the two men cemented the bond that brought the premier to t he Corn Belt. Garst was born in Rockford, Ill., on June 14, 1898.
